Edit: Even kids younger than 15 y/o who have a smartphone use Whatsapp.

I know WhatsApp is like the international standard but you all need to get off that shit. Meta should be boycotted globally.

I’ll contend the biggest play Meta ever did was buying Whatsapp. They saw the app had reached critical mass and was an actual necessity, unlike their facebook crap which only appeals to a certain subset of people.

And now we’re all stuck with it and Meta’s enshitification and progressive privacy violations.

I don’t understand why this is just ok everywhere. People are swearing off American tech in droves, yet somehow this one gets a free pass.

FYI a lot of Indian government agencies use WhatsApp for their everyday operations. Most Indians don’t care about the US stuff, all they need is WhatsApp

I still don’t get it. If WhatsApp is ok, why not Facebook messenger? Why not instagram dm’s? Meta alleges that WhatsApp is “encrypted”, but why would anyone believe that? Is “trust me bro” good enough for the government of a nuclear power? And yes I know the US is no better, but India’s government relying on a commercial product from an American spy company is bonkers. It would be like the the EU using WeChat.

The encryption happens client side, so it’s easy to verify that it’s happening.

Metadata sent with messages (who you’re talking to, when the message was sent etc) isn’t encrypted.

There’s still no reason to believe that they don’t have a back door to the message content. It’s closed source, and they’re an evil company whose entire business model is surveillance through lack of privacy. I know where I would put my chips.

WhatsApp is at least E2EE but Instagram isn’t even E2EE. Even Facebook Messenger is safer. Although, out of all the Meta apps, WhatsApp is the safest bet. I’m not necessarily promoting and saying you should use WhatsApp but just saying that it’s a safer bet. If you want an actual privacy respecting messaging app, check out Signal. If you wanna be anonymous, use SimpleX Chat

Honestly… I don’t even know. Looking at the quality of images most of them seem fake channels — the original images seem to have been scraped from personal FB/Insta or some malicious app on someone’s phone that has full gallery access or maybe ex-boyfriends making their lives a hell. But some of them… yes, they seem Onyfanish type accounts who later start promoting some small brands to make a buck. Most of these channels seem to come from small towns and tier 2 cities.

TIL you can click updates for shit like this.

I sincerely thought WhatsApp was just a pure messaging service. Using it for years and never once clicked that.

A Pooja is a sort of ceremonial prayer. It’s also a common name associated with some actresses who were or are attractive.

As an aside theres a movie “Khabie Kushi Khabie Gum” with a character named Pooja living in the UK. The filmmakers decided should have the nickname (drumroll please) Poo. No, it is not possible to take seriously.

Having recommended channel on a direct messagerie app is infuriating enough. But they always find a way to have us even more mad.

@sonofearth 0 idea why they are doing this. I am getting the same recommendations even after using Ublock Orgin and everything for years. Shouldn’t about half of the users be actually female?

I think maybe because majority of the popular channels are either Bhakti Channels, News Outlets or this bullshit. And they just want people to get hooked to the constant dopamine from religious propaganda, Godi Media’s political propaganda and Attention capitalization of Sex Deprived people in a country where sex is a Taboo. These are the factors that help them strengthen their position in this country. You can see it on other Meta Platforms as well. Most of the content over there is similar.

I’m from Germany and I get recommendations for all kinds of German police forces (for each major city). Added to that, I often get channels for microwave recipes or random channels underage teenagers have created.

    What a great system!
