three luxury crops that millions rely on daily
I think I’m missing the correct definitions for a couple words here…
See I would call the expensive grades of coffee (specialty coffee, single origin, natural processed, etc) luxury but the vast majority of coffee sold is utility grade.
Similarly for chocolate!
Without coffee, half the world ceases to function. So that half is the luxurious half.
A cup of coffee has a noticeable effect on my mood and motivation. I drink a cup in the morning whether I like it or not.
For a week or two people would be cranky and then everyone would adjust. Just like anyone who has ever quit caffeine has done.
People can adapt. Caffeine is not a necessity.
It is for capitalism. That or cocaine.
Without caffeine … the world would suffer a massive withdrawal … then everyone would start acting with more clarity and common sense.
Neither is sanitation or shelter.
I mean, they’re pretty big industries. Can’t grow the plants, a lot of people are out of jobs, and not just the farmers…
No. Luxuries are essential to some people. Mainly 2 groups: enslaved providers, and people with medical needs.
Wait until it’s wheat and corn
You’re not going to give a shit about the chocolate
If Putin takes Ukraine then Putin will be in charge of approximately 1/3 of the carbohydrates on the planet.
i think they fare better in temperate climates, its the tropical ones like cacoa, vanilla, oranges, etc that are in trouble.
My point is that temperate climates are going to get fucked too, it’ll just take slightly longer. But it will happen within our natural lifetimes.
What do we eat then?
Soylent Green
Sensationalised headline. The cited research is about stratospheric aerosol injection and the effects thereof on luxury crops.

We will make potato wine.
And potatoes chocolate
Study is only for solar cooling or seeding clouds.
Yup. About stratospheric aerosol injection. Totally misrepresented headline.

Ehh that’s dramatic. There are plenty of (not great tasting) fakes. We can easily synthesize caffeine, and alcohol can come from fermenting plenty of fruits and other things. There’s also teas of numerous varieties. So we’ll be just as caffeinated and drunk complaining about how bad the shitty fake Hershey’s chocolate tastes.
All that aside, there are a lot of crops which are essentially monocultures that are in danger from things like disease and climate change. Bananas, coffee, cacao, even oranges.
Grapes? We can’t save grapes?
caffeine pills it is then
Also has been.
Coffee and wine don’t matter. Will climate denialist parents that pretend to care about their kids go as far as giving up coffee and wine to help afford chocolate for Halloween / Christmas time at least? Or is chocolate the first one to get cut out when it’s harder to match supply with demand?
