Donald Trump has threatened legal action against the BBC and welcomed the resignations of two of its most senior figures after a campaign against the broadcaster that reached fever pitch over criticism that its flagship documentary programme in 2024 used a misleading edit of a Trump speech.

Lawyers for the US president said that the BBC must retract the Panorama documentary by Friday or face a lawsuit for “no less” than $1bn (£760m), according to US media outlets who cited the letter. The BBC has confirmed it had received a letter and said it will respond in due course.

The resignations of the BBC director general, Tim Davie, and its News CEO, Deborah Turness, came after the rightwing Telegraph newspaper published a leaked internal report by a former BBC standards adviser alleging failings in the broadcaster’s coverage. The report criticised BBC coverage on transgender issues, Gaza and an edit of a Trump speech from January 6 during the Capitol Hill insurrection.

A “misleading edit” AKA what he said but in a order he doesn’t like.

Media objectively portrays Trump as bad after he calls them the enemy of the people.

I can’t even with the king of misleading. Why every news source in the world has not eviscerated him on a daily basis is beyond me.

BBC has presence and offices in the US, which are held liable for conduct within the US. IANAL, but I imagine legally speaking, you can even hold them liable for content hosted in the US on servers there, perhaps going as far as content that is served to the US. Suing them is just the beginning of the legal process to legally do with that liability as they wish, like removing their servers/access in the US.

He is definitely not suing them over in England. That would not go well for him.

Hahahaha. He will almost certainly file the case in England, as under UK libel laws he has a slam-dunk case and is all but guaranteed a judgement in his favour. He won’t be awarded anything near a billion but it’ll be easy money whatever it is, and more importantly will humiliate the BBC.

Gentleman’s bet. You win if he does and is successful. I lose if he does it at all. A tie if he does it but is unsuccessful.
