Sacramento CA area.
Sparrow to Robin size. Golden belly with strong blue wings. Almost like a shrub jay with darker wings.
No chance you could have possibly rotated and cropped the photo before posting, eh?
Like this:

Make life harder for those that follows so they can grow tougher.
Well, there was always a chance you had no clue that such a thing could be done with photos you took.
I mean, I do know some exceedingly Luddite people who can barely take a photo, and for whom any ability to edit is far beyond their abilities. Nice people, but born most of a century too late. They would have been much more successful in the 50s or even earlier.
But a lot of people know the features exist within the camera app, they just can’t be arsed to use them.
I was just in a hurry and lazy.
Between the picture, your description and the area you saw it, I’m thinking it might be a Lazuli Bunting.
I’m thinking its one of these https://onthefeeder.com/blue-birds-orange-chests/
Helpful but I don’t see a match. I’ll try to go back tomorrow and get a better shot.
it might be a little hard to id them right now because they wouldnt have their full spring/summer colors
where I live the golded sparrow takes on a dramatic change in colors for the seasonal change
I feel that it is something between full plumage.
With that eye stripe and crest, I’m thinking Cedar Waxwing?
I concur.
Not a cedar waxwing. The secondaries are a deep blue.
Western bluebird maybe?
Possible, the masked eyes don’t match
Red Breasted Nuthatch(es)?
I use this app to identify bird songs. Might be useful next time you are there. https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/
I have it but no luck. Didn’t have sound due to the area. I’ll try again tomorrow.
