Land before time came out in 88 that’s only 35 years ago. The CDC reccomends colonoscopies at 45.
It’s close. I must have seen it long after its initial release or while I was very young. But I’m still about a decade off from 45.
The rates of colorectal cancer are increasing in young adults. It’s best you start earlier so that problematic polyps and adenomas can be removed before they get worse.
Yup. My family has a history of colon polyps, so I had my first screening at 42 and they found a precancerous polyp.
I’ve got a family history of it and probably should get checked early bit haven’t. Here’s to hoping that the article I saw that said THC is toxic to polyps literally saves my ass.
I think you’ve stumbled upon an innovative new way to ingest THC…
So now are we going to get stereotypical comments on big nuggets like big shrooms?
“… Boof it.”
Wasn’t there a recent meta study that showed colonoscopies were basically useless?
I haven’t heard this but that would be an interesting read
I looked it up and it was in 2022. Apparently it was misreported. The study investigated how advertising for colonoscopies as part of public health programs was effective or not. And it turned out it’s not effective at all. It did not look for how effective the colonoscopies themselves are. I just read this summary:
https://www.statnews.com/2022/10/14/colonoscopy-study-experts-discuss-furor-nuances/
I’d be very surprised to learn that colonoscopies themselves are useless considering that we know polyps lead to cancer and are cancerous and we are visually identifying and removing them with the good ole rectal camera device.
Also colonoscopies aren’t just used for cancer prevention and are used on IBD to determine the condition of the disease. Basically any time you have a problem with your lower intestine or rectum, they’re a cheap and effective way to find out what’s going on.
You don’t really start to retain memories until after 5 as your brain basically rewires itself at that point. So if you “remember” it (from its debut), you’re probably closer to 40.
I likley just rented the vhs from blockbuster because it had dinosaurs on it
It sure as hell did have dinosaurs
You don’t really start to retain memories until after 5 as your brain basically rewires itself after that.
I call bullsh*t on that. I have many memories from before age 5, and one from as young as 14 months. I may be a statistical outlier with that last bit, but I can’t believe that our brains don’t save any memories from before we were 5.
Some research does actually support your position that we do actually retain memories from our youth, but more so we forget them as we get older. Studies have shown that children remember their childhood, and can recall memories from very young. But we seem to forget them as we do into adulthood. It’s not that children are incapable of remembering
Not if you have heavy PTSD! It’s like having a superpower that for some reason makes it difficult to buy bread sometimes.
Feel free to think what you want, but that what the current research suggests.
The Wikipedia page on childhood amnesia actually has some pretty good references on this linked. Humans are also really good at creating and modifying memories to implant new ones or change existing ones.
Your links actually show mixed opinions on Childhood Amnesia. The second paragraph in the Wikipedia article says children are capable of retaining memories before the age of two, which refutes your claim that we can’t retain them until after 5 years old.
You might want to reread that (or check the actual linked research), it doesn’t say “retain” it says “remember”. It’s referring to recall specifically in children to establish when those memories start to fade or become inaccurate. The studies linked were regarding interviews with those who were still children. For example, the Cleveland & Reese study was interviewing 5½ year olds. The Tustin et al paper provides a better timeline comparison at various age stages.
I can confirm this. Am 41 and I remember it quite clearly.
It might not have been released at exactly the same date in my country as the US release. But it should be close enough.
I remember watching that movie as a child on TV and I’m 25
Ok boomer
Same. Though I guess it could be edited to say “remember seeing it in theatres”. That’d put you at least around 5-7.
That’d make much more sense
Most people don’t remember movies they’ve seen when they were new borns.
Never too early to be touched by and Angel.

Yup, because children never watch old movies.
Never once
Yep, because memes must always be taken seriously
Not quite; movie’s only 35 years old. First colonoscopy is recommended at age 45.
To be fair, it also says if you remember this movie. So you’re adding on at minimum 4-5 years before you’re old enough to start remembering this movie at all, much less clearly. Then there’s the wording that says “about time”. To your not quite I instead offer a simple “Quite.”
You’re right, but it doesn’t make it more likely the viewer is older.
I’m 30 and I remember the movie, but I probably watched it when I was like 10 and the movie was already 15 years old.
True but, and this is really important, this is a meme.
Not sure why this instance particularly is so fascinated with taking every meme painfully seriously. It’s a bit idiotic.
For what it’s worth, I’m 35 and had a colonoscopy not long ago due to intense abdominal pain that lingered for years and no other test could pick anything up (went through many things throughout the years, mostly being brushed off by the NHS).
It didn’t detect cancer, however they almost immediately recognised Diverticular Disease which would not show on anything else they did.Been on daily laxatives since and I feel physically quite good. Took away years of pain, however the prep is nothing to laugh at. I thought I could handle it, didn’t seem so bad… Man, let me tell you I still think my actual soul got flushed and is floating in the River Thames to this day.
But that would only be if you remember seeing it at release
Exactly. Thus being… the colonoscopy holds up perfectly
No, because I recognize this movie without having seen it in theaters, and am under thirty. The post only says recognize, not “remember seeing in theaters”
Agreed, I fucking loved this movie when I was like 3. Am under 30
Yeah, and its almost like it’s a meme and not meant to be taken super seriously. Like the comments. Something that repeatedly seems to sail about three miles above yalls head.
I can put a 5 year old in front of this movie to watch it for the first time, do they also need a colonoscopy?
If you were 10 when it came out, it’s time
Yup yup!
Don’t make me sad like that bro.
Also I’m only 32!
Bro I am 24. I think I’m okay for a lil bit
If you are being recommended colonoscopy as a regular-risk person on the basis of age, your health system is not serving you well. Compared to colonoscopies, regular FOBT or FIT testing has an insignificant risk of complications (bowel perforations, death etc) and is easily conducted at home without the unpleasant “preparation” required of a scope. If done every 2-3 years they are at least as (and maybe more) effective at detecting cancer compared to a scope.
What is FOBT and FIT testing?
@15liam20@lemmy.world shared a great link for FIT. From the same website: FOBT = Fecal Occult Blood Test
-
FIT/FOBT: low-cost, low-barrier, easy and 100% safe test done by the patient themselves at home
-
Colonoscopy: expensive, resource-intensive, onerous, invasive, time-consuming and while usually safe there are complications up to and including death
Even though an individual colonoscopy is more sensitive than an individual FOBT/FIT, regular use of FOBT/FIT is probably more effective overall on the population level. Unlike a colonoscopy, it is reasonable to repeat the FOBT/FIT every 1-2 years. Screening colonoscopies are usually done at intervals of 10 years. So imagine if you start doing colon cancer screening in 2023. In 2024, you start to develop cancer. If you are screening by colonoscopy, you will have to wait until 2033 to find it, unless you have symptoms in which case you are in trouble! (The whole idea of screening is you don’t wait for symptoms.) Also it is important to remember that in the real world, people hate colonoscopies, health care is not always perfectly accessible, life gets in the way etc so it could be even more delayed. But if you are doing your FIT/FOBT every 1-2 years you will likely detect it fairly quickly. People are much more likely to actually go through with FIT/FOBT testing compared to colonoscopies. Then when you get the positive FIT/FOBT result, you’d be sent for a colonoscopy (or some other equivalent) for the confirming diagnosis.
Ah. Thank you very much for this information!
My doctor briefly mentioned this after I brought up some issues that my coworker had at 38.
The testing span of 10 years is long, but I have family members who had serious complications from a colonoscopy. I imagine the risk is high enough that 10 years is often enough to catch some measured percentage of the population that develops treatable cancer…

Thank you!
Yep Yep Yep!
Now I’m sad again :(
Don’t look up what happened to her VA. :(
I’m not sure I know?
Already had mine. Checked a-ok despite the functional alcoholism in my teens and twenties. Thanks!
Congrats man! I’m 43 and I’ve had 2 checks so far. Wildest one is when they do both ends at the same time. Nothing like getting spit roasted by camera machines.
“This had better not awaken anything in me”
You have a deantastic day!
Did anyone else think those leaves looked tasty as fuck when you were a kid?
This and Watership Down are two of my favourite movies that fit a genre that seems to hardly exist any more. A movie where the journey is the story. Love them. Also I will continue to be in denial about my age thank you very much!
Watership Down and Plague Dogs are a whole different level. I agree with your sentiment. I just want to add that some dinosaurs watching relatives die just the same.
We’re not old, we are young in spirit.
Reddit moment
As Littlefoot says, “How fucking dare you.”
I’m definetly too young but maybe it’s just because I was a dinosaur kid.
Ha! I’ve had at least 4
Did you enjoy it?
