I’m glad they found a way, but at the same time - what the hell? Why is it OK for game devs of this magnitude to have a hardcoded hardware list? Look for feature support, not a string that is easy to manipulate outside your control!
The problem in this case is that they automatically trigger XeSS, which isn’t bad unto itself (unless it can’t be deactivated, which this sounds like).
The GPU does support XeSS but it crashes on Linux. If they just added a toggle/cmd flag to disable the feature changing the vendorId wouldn’t be necessary.
Could the game developers simply add this toggle for XeSS?
LinUX iS nOt A sUpPoRrtEd PlaTfOrm
I am playing Baldur’s Gate 3 (can’t say enough great things about this game) and they had a toggle in the game setting for upscaling options. And DLSS runs great with my Linux PC. I thought I heard Larian say they are trying to get XeSS too.
You can enable either Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR via the settings menu.
I imagine Larian care. Especially since they’re pushing Steamdeck support.
The reason this is a “supported platform” issue is that the developers of Hogwarts legacy know their supported platforms support XeSS, so any work that is not “just turn it on” is additional work for no gain.
Could Intel fix the issue with XeSS on Linux?
Is the problem with Intel, Linux, or the game itself?
The game runs when XeSS is disabled. The game runs on Linux otherwise. The only factor causing it to fail is XeSS.
If XeSS causes the issue on any games that activate it, then it is most likely an Intel issue.
I would bet money that Intel’s dev rel team worked closely with Avalanche to add XeSS support to sell more Intel GPUs.
Most likely the Hogwarts devs were said, “sure, do whatever you want on your own hardware, just don’t you dare break anything on any other platform while we’re trying to ship”. The easiest way to green light this and know nothing else would be affected would be to hard code everything behind Intel’s vendor IDs.
So this probably isn’t a case of Intel working around a game dev’s code, it’s probably a case of Intel working around its own code.
IIRC, with an Nvidia card DXVK will spoof an AMD card in a lot of games because otherwise the game will try to interact with the Windows Nvidia drivers which aren’t there.
You remember correctly. From the DXVK conf file:
# Report Nvidia GPUs as AMD GPUs by default. This is enabled by default # to work around issues with NVAPI, but may cause issues in some games. # # Supported values: True, False # dxgi.nvapiHack = True
nteract with the Windows Nvidia drivers which aren’t there
Funny story. I was trying to get RayTracing working under Wine for a few days and finally found the solution (needed to download the nvlibs zip from GitHub and run the installer).
Couple weeks later I went back into Wine and it was broken. After another 3 days of struggling, I decided to redownload nvlibs and run the installer, when I noticed it only symlinks the needed libraries into WINEPREFIX. Me, being the resource miser I am, had removed the folder from ~/Downloads when I thought I was done with it …
This is the best summary I could come up with:
Those running Intel Arc Graphics on Linux can now enjoy the Hogwarts Legacy game under Valve’s Steam Play.
Earlier this year Intel’s Mesa developers added the ability to conceal the Vulkan vendor to workaround game-specific issues.
When the game was running under Linux via Steam Play and seeing Intel graphics were being utilized, XeSS was being triggered.
With the Hogwarts Legacy game it’s a similar story of XeSS being triggered and causing problems under Linux…
So the simple workaround is again to conceal the Vulkan vendor so the game engine doesn’t know Intel graphics are being utilized.
This patch adds the Hogwarts Legacy (HogwartsLegacy.exe) detection to DriConf and then sets the force_vk_vendor=-1 behavior to allow this popular game to work on Intel graphics under Linux.
I’m a bot and I’m open source!
Good bot!
Cool, but i don’t intend to give money to anything that supports the Queen of TERFdom
Easier to torrent now 😎
I’d feel iffy about even that tbh
JK’s anti trans meltdown has soured all my interest in the HP universe
What’s that?
Terf stands for “Trans exclusionary Radical feminist”, which is a type of feminist that pushes for women’s rights, but doesn’t support transgender rights, and thinks MtF transgender people don’t count as women.
A lot of people have boycotted Hogwarts legacy because of her political views. Personally, I think it’s a bit extreme to boycott a great game made by a studio and developers that have nothing to do with her views just because she gets royalties on it, but that’s a matter of personal opinion
@waz @bric Except for this little bit:
https://kotaku.com/hogwarts-legacy-lead-designer-used-to-run-anti-social-j-1846316222
And they kinda very much *are* her views. She did, after all, write a series of books replete with Jewish stereotypes and slavery apologia that, yeah, went over a lot of our heads when the books first came out because yay wizardstuffs, but now in context with everything else, it makes more sense. This game even involves putting down a goblin rebellion.
What are these books ? do you mean Harry Potter ? something else ?
I find it really tiresome that there are accounts still asking supposedly innocent questions. Yes, of course they mean Harry Potter, you’re in a discussion about a game set in the school which is central to the plot of the Harry Potter books.
That was not exactly obvious to me, I mean their description is far removed from what I remember the books being. Then there’s the fact they don’t mention the book by name, and since I’m not familiar with the author’s other works, I assumed they may have been referring to an earlier, lesser-known story.
Don’t be tired, you’re always going to have to clarify stuff for people, and if you’re positive about it you maximize the chances of a fruitful interaction
Now I’d love to know what in HP is a slavery apology because I have no memory of that
Also, why “accounts”? instead of “people”
You’re not fooling anyone.
Is it really a great game though? It’s pretty, and the Hogwarts part is cool, but it’s pretty shit in my opinion. It doesn’t take it’s world seriously. For example, the groundskeeper is the person who teaches you how to pick locks (and they turned an unlocking spell into a shitty lockpicking mini game you have to do over and over) and tells you to break curfew. This is the only time the curfew even matters though. All other times you run around at night and no one is around and no one cares.
You also do the same three or four boring activities all over. Sure, the world is fairly large and looks pretty, but it’s about the most bland I’ve seen in a game, and it’s supposed to be magical. Every location just had these same thing to make it not feel empty, but it totally is.
They saw the Ubisoft open world games and had the thought of all the crap people complain about those for should be their goal, and then they somehow made them even worse. It is the most uninspired game I’ve played in a long time once you get past the graphics and thinking it’s cool just because the series it’s based on was done well.
Even if they don’t, buying this game still goes in to lining JKRs pockets, something she has explicitly considered as validation of her beliefs.
The makers of the movies, and the publishers of the books also probably didn’t all have anti-trans views, but they don’t have to for JKR to use them to cause harm.
I get it, the devs of a good game don’t deserve to be attached to her, but you’ve got to draw the line somewhere and this is where I’ve chosen to draw mine.
Oh, 100%. I was just pointing out that the whole project was shitty, not just JKR. But JKR is 100% shitty.

There was nothing like that in the HP books because the HP books were written by someone who is extremely anti-trans. It sounds like (although I’ve not played it) they put a trans character in to distance themselves from the IP holder’s views. It’s not really that they forced it there, they put one there to signify that they aren’t about that…
Then from what I understand put a bunch of anti-Semitic shit in their game. Either way, I can’t recommend picking up Hogwarts Legacy. The IP seems shallow, the ideals that the game pushes seem toxic, the IP’s ideals seem toxic, and overall, there are better things to spend money on than toxic AF people.
@headlesscyborg @bric the idea that you’re somehow into Linux and yet anti-trans is fucking mind blowing. Do you know how many Linux developers I’ve met that are trans? Get the fuck out of here.
Not anti-trans at all, but what does being on linux has anything to do with trans views? You would be surprised how many far right-winger bigots aren’t tech illiterate. Many of them run dark websites with illegal content.
@HellAwaits that’s skipping over the fact that they stated that they didn’t support the game EXPLICITLY because there was trans representation. Clearly they have an issue if representation gets under their skin so much. I mean I hate Nazis, but I still play Wolfenstein.
In fact, I’ve met more people who are massively into Linux and right-wing extremists thinking that Bill Gates is controlling the spy network through windows or some shit than I have left-wing extremists that are massively into Linux.
Yeah do you know how many Christians get vaccinated?

@headlesscyborg if I gave any fucks what you or anyone else thought would I be free enough to look how I want? You can always see those with small egos because they think that attacking someone’s appearance is an effective strategy. I would expect absolutely no less from a complete bigot like you. At least now it’s also glaringly obvious how fragile you are on top of it.
Very brave
J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans rhetoric and activism has enough influence to lead directly or otherwise to the further persecution and discrimination against an already marginalised minority group.
She at some point opted for or was identified by those with similar views as the term TERF, a ‘trans-exclusionary radical feminist’ (the acronym is arguably problematic). The queer community and queer allies use the term with a implied derogatory connotation. A number of TERFs who picked up on this connotation now believe that it is an insult, and do not wish to be labelled as such (despite TERFs coining the term themseIves).
J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans rhetoric and activism has enough influence to lead directly or otherwise to the further persecution and discrimination against an already marginalised minority group.
So does Lemmy and its developers pro-Uyghur slavery/genocide viewpoints. That doesn’t stop you from using or enjoying Lemmy though. Everyone has their own red line. Lemmy hasn’t crossed yours just like J. K. Rowling hasn’t crossed theirs.
What exactly are you arguing against, here? I don’t waste time on people who try to strawman me.
No, that wouldn’t be a straw man argument. If you’re going to try to call fallacy on something you would have to argue appeal to hypocrisy. However the hypocrisy is based on your post and previous posts calling for a boycott for something you find morally reprehensible while at the same time using a platform created by the morally reprehensible. One you have a problem with the other you do not. It calls into question your own morals when they only serve you when you think they should. That’s all.
Yeah uh no, I didn’t argue one way or the other about a boycott. That was your assumption and you’re trying to get me to fight it. If I cared to tell people what to think about a heated topic on the internet and then defend my position it from a bunch of mouthbreathers, I would go back to Reddit.
Your comment is a de facto strawman.
You seen to be getting pretty upset about this topic for someone not arguing about it. If you don’t have a position, that’s fine. It doesn’t seem that way, but that’s you. Also that’s again not how straw man is defined.
So does Lemmy and its developers pro-Uyghur slavery/genocide viewpoints.
Im genuinely interested in a source for this statement.
Edit: I added the quote block for clarity.
@h3mlocke @Morgikan Here’s a brief overview of what happened: https://www.glamour.com/story/a-complete-breakdown-of-the-jk-rowling-transgender-comments-controversy

Lol, no, this part. Sorry I should have specified, I already know JK is a TERF.

My dude unironically believes that people are out here cutting off their dicks so they can victimize others.
No one said anything about people cutting off their dicks to victimise others. This is just a clickbait reply, for what? There’s no karma here.
some examples of your “brilliant philanthropist”
That’s the most based article I’ve read.
This is a shit take honestly and it’s the exact reason people are calling her out. She has a large voice and a large reach, and she is reaching people like you who think these things which are completely nonsensical.
Lets just ban all of religion right now as well, because priests and the like are 500x more likely to be masquerading around as paedos, sex offenders and psychopaths
No one has mentioned banning anything. There is a very real problem with convicted people attempting to do this stuff, it’s very prominent and in the news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-63823420
Please stop knee-jerk reacting and thinking that everything is black and white.
So then what, in your opinion, is the endgame here with Trans people?
Once again, this is looking for a black and white answer. I don’t have one for you. But, I do believe engaging with people, looking at the pros and the cons and not attacking/defending with zeal is the best goal.
Thing change. So do arguments.
@allywilson @oneshibbyguy fuck off with this shit. JK Rowling has caused real, material harm to trans women in the UK and elsewhere.
Wtf?.. Your reasoning is dumb as fuck

it supports trans… people… damn that was hard to write… which is the reason I never bought it
Not sure I’m understanding… You’re saying you didn’t buy the game because the content of it is pro trans? And what about that sentence was hard to write?
you would not support Rowling by buying it because it’s trying to do the opposite. There’s even a trans character in a pub.
JK profits from the game’s sales
I still want to know why these people care at all.
Personally, I don’t even want to think about the genitals of 99% of the people that I’ve met. I honestly don’t want to know, it has nothing to do with me. I’m more than OK leaving some things unsaid. I don’t want to know. If you tell me your own gender or preferred name, cool, I’ll respect that and leave it at that. You’ll never see me asking if someone is trans. I won’t push privacy, and again, it’s none of my business unless it is.
Why do these people care so much about complete stranger’s genitals? It is an obsession or a fetish? Is it just xenophobia?
The thought never even crosses my mind. I would be super grossed out if a stranger ever asked about mine, tbh. It’s weird shit to judge an entire human off of, if you ask me.
If a strangers bits are important to you, you should really look into why that is.
It seems to me calling trans people “people” was hard.
I think so too, I just wanted to make them admit it.
@headlesscyborg @irmoz if you’re so anti-trans maybe you should get off the catgirl’s internet.
Damn straight
We’re you born retarded?
Imagine lying to a game because you haven’t fixed your own features…
That sounds like a Not The Onion headline
