Green herons are indeed green, or at least appear so via some kind of iridescence when they’re hit by sunlight. You don’t typically think of finding herons in a tree, but in a tree is precisely where these two were. I believe this is a male and female pair but I don’t know enough to be sure.

They have quite an extensible neck, but when they’re just sitting around and not pecking at anything they usually keep it retracted like this. It makes them look like any other songbird until you notice the long legs and the bodaciousness of that beak.

Bonus picture of this one having a floof:

Minor update, me and my big dumb lens have obviously been out and about lately. I’ve read the sidebar, but given the current insane political climate I’ve decided without much reflection required that I’m not keen on disclosing even my approximate location these days. I’ve been making my pictures [OC] just so there isn’t any ambiguity; everything I post here is indeed an original photo of mine and all of them are recent. They’re watermarked as well, but I’ve tried to keep it subtle rather than annoying. This is the stupid world in which we live these days. (If you ever post a nice photo online and it gains traction, do yourself a favor and never reverse image search it, lest you to turn into a pillar of salt.)

It’d probably be easier to be a bird.
