Most birds in Prospect Park seem to be in hiding, whether in a summer moult, or just it being too hot and dry.

But this warbler, who I’m reasonably sure is a Chiffchaff, made an appearance for long enough to snap them.

With the aid of various AI tools I can now instantly tell the difference between a chaffinch and a chiffchaff! It’s not much but I’m proud of it.

Heh. The classic challenge in this case is Chiffchaff vs Willow Warbler - very similar indeed (the Chiffchaff being a Warbler itself).

My favourite tool is Merlin ID, the photo and sound ID parts of it, from Cornell Labs. What’s yours?

Yep, what I like about Merlin is the description search, where spits out possible matches based on physical description. Because with a tiny lens from 30m it’s unrealistic to get amazing pics like yours!

I use WhoBird for sound ID, because it’s lightweight and on the open-source app store F-Droid.
