China has shown a prototype of a system for emergency firing of an electric car battery in case of fire threat. It looks dubious and creepy.

It has long been established that anybody not actually in the car is sacrificial

Pedestrians, shop fronts, other cars, cyclists.

This is a horrible idea if you think about it for longer than 10 seconds.

And it doesn’t protect the driver from the angry mob of friends and family of the person they just battery-bombed.

That will never catch on for many of the same reasons that replaceable EV battery packs haven’t caught on. The mechanisms to make a high current load battery be removable have to be chonky. That’s extra space and weight that could be used to add more battery, or just not have that weight.

And also, other car driver will not like having a hot explosive shot right under their car and burning them instead.

Yeah, should discard the 18650s individually. Grape shot approach.

Why so powerful? And to the side?!? At least out the front/back is more likely to be clear road. Still terrible of course.

Why not use the sensors to alert the driver to evacuate instead?
