The other day, I had an interview for a position that was advertised as “full-time, but part-time is an option, too.” They asked me why I wanted to work part-time when I’m still young and full of energyTM. I said something about work-life balance, but the truth is, I’m scared that this comic is gonna be my reality. I’m just not willing to sacrifice such a large chunk of my life to our corporate overlords.

The irony of this being commented right as I had to work almost solid for two months as we frantically on-shored capacity that was lost when one of our key suppliers in the United States went bankrupt thanks to the tariffs.

I was wondering where you went! I figured you needed a break, but you were busy dealing with the consequences of the actions of a man who will never have to deal with the consequences of his own actions. I’m sorry to hear that. It’s good to see you again, and I hope you at least get to take some extra time off to relax and wind down after so much hard work.

Oh I did and very much do.

and I hope you at least get to take some extra time off to relax and wind down after so much hard work.

I wish, I am probably going to have to keep going through the holidays into next spring. But I will be able to go from ~120hr weeks to ~60hr weeks assuming that we don’t have any major issues (Which if you have ever worked with old industrial machinery, you know is basically guarenteed). Lucky me.

but you were busy dealing with the consequences of the actions of a man who will never have to deal with the consequences of his own actions.

Eh, it is not entirely the old pedophile’s fault. We did not plan to nearly double our headcount to take over the operations of the most complicated link of our supply chain at effectively a moments notice. Especially since they seemed like they were doing well.

On a serious note this is a small snippet of what they had to deal with when importing the precursors. They were dealing with the high end of the tariffs.

Such a smart move to revitalize American manufacturing.

It’s good to see you again,

          Good to see you too!

All depends on the situation you’re in, though people generally end up needing to work all those hours to survive basically. If you have the privilege to work fewer hours and enjoy your life more, it makes perfect sense you’d want to do so. It is inherently an exploitative system, though it’s more than just the raw number of hours worked too. Personally, part time wasn’t much better than full time for me, because I’d just be scheduled all over the place to patch gaps for full-timers, so I never had any routine consistency. Regardless, I hope things work out for you if you get that position.

Yes, being scheduled whenever there’s a gap stinks because it makes it really hard to get into a good rhythm. And I agree that working part-time is a privilege, and I’m fortunate to live in a part of the world where you can live somewhat comfortably with a net salary of ~€1,400 a month, though there are no retirement savings in that. If I had to provide for a family or wanted to live in something bigger than a one-room flat, though, it’d be tough to make ends meet without a full-time job.

I used to work full-time for a while, but it took a lot out of me and made me suicidal after half a year. Maybe that was also because my employer sucked, but I’m scared of that happening again. I’d love to see a different system one day, a system that is not exploitative. Anyway, thank you for your kind words. I doubt it’ll work out, but maybe it will. Who knows.

In college I drew for about 1-2 hours a day. Now that I’m working full time I barely have energy to draw once or twice a week…
