Technology@lemmy.world•Yes, a Pigeon is Faster for Data Transfer than Gigabit Fiber InternetEnglish
54·2 years agoHaha, in some parts of germany you can do that yourself. on foot. with a zipdisk.
Even though I am aware of sounding incredibly cliché and cringe: The more you try to force it, the less success you’ll have. Forget personality types. Forget ‘effort’. People seem to instinctlively know when you’re not having a good time or when you’re outside your comfort zone. So have a good time first, and look for a mate second.
(Also, I am aromantic, so my sack of advice is probably worth only the sack)

Restricting posting from accounts that don’t meet some adjustable criteria. Like account age, comment count, prior moderation action, average comment length (upvote quota maybe not, because not all instances use it)
Automatic hash comparison of uploaded images with database of registered illegal content.

Fediverse@lemmy.ml•You can be banned from lemmy.blahaj.zone for calling out transphobia
18·2 years agoBe advised: I recognize this person joining and speedrunning Ban% in safespaces for several months now. This is at least my 4th sighting of them. They will antagonize the userbase in record time by blatant disregard of netiquette and basic human decency. They will cite any of their vast repertoire of mental conditions or minority membership cards as justification when called out on bad behavior - whatever is convenient at the time. Conversation to them is a game that must be won at all cost and people with even slightly differing opinions are seen as enemies that need to be defeated (and also humiliated) Their strategy is generally to single out one member and harass them with wall of text posts.
Do not engage. Do not educate - dozens have tried and failed. Just identify the pattern and ban permanently, before they can do any lasting damage to your community.

Agamemnon@lemmy.worldMto[Dormant] moved to !space@mander.xyz@lemmy.world•Hackers are Attacking Observatories
1·2 years agoYes! Agreed! Earthbound observatories in second line are in a constant struggle of acquiring proper funding. Which means, that they are operated by people with passion - for the science. The unfortunate side effect is, that everything that isn’t operations and academia takes second place again. Employing someone dedicated to just cybersecurity isn’t perceived as a priority - after all, ‘why would anyone hack an observatory?’
That is the kind of fallacy that can only be avoided if you already had an expert in house, unfortunately. I have been working with researchers, too, and I got the general impression that the appreciation for and crossover of ideas between departments has a lot of room for improvement. So that could also be a factor.

7·2 years agoNgl… the press release and article reeks like their IT department was a shitshow to begin with and the only method they could think of defending was to rip out ALL the cables.
I bet it wasn’t even a targeted attack, but they have to frame it that way to save face.
edit: Also… sympathies for everyone being stalled in their research for … 25(!) days now. This for sure could have been prevented with better risk management and damage control.

World News@lemmy.world•Prigozhin’s Body Identified in Morgue by Missing Finger: ReportEnglish
10·2 years agoEveryone should be aware that the final say is provided by Putin. And is a foregone conclusion - for purely tactical and propaganda reasons, the official version will be that Prigozhin is dead. And nobody will contest that - least of all Prigozhin himself.
“Unnamed iStock photo model” is the best answer I managed to arrive at.
Agamemnon@lemmy.worldMto[Dormant] moved to !space@mander.xyz@lemmy.world•We Might Have Accidentally Killed the Only Life We Ever Found on Mars Nearly 50 Years Ago
10·2 years agoI do agree with the conclusion. - A new mission dedicated to answering the question of life on Mars is warranted. Earthbound discoveries of extremophile microbial life in the past decades have broadened our definition of life-enabling environmental conditions and discoveries of new classes of only intermittently alive cells/spores have broadened our definition of life itself.
Plus, apart from satisfying our curiosity, we will very likely get some insights into our own biochemistry along the way.
Let me rephrase the question:
Who is this actress? I feel I have seen her before, but I can’t recall where and am lost for a name to google after.
Agamemnon@lemmy.worldMto[Dormant] moved to !space@mander.xyz@lemmy.world•We Might Have Accidentally Killed the Only Life We Ever Found on Mars Nearly 50 Years Ago
18·2 years agoA very important distinction.
That link sums up about 60% of what I heard about it and was 60% complete news for me. (And yes these intentionally add up to 120%) I thought ‘tbh’ stood for ‘to be honest’, but now I am no longer sure.
8 weeks after posting this, I still have no idea what is going on in that meme. There is apparently no consistent story behind the creature, it is constantly transmuted and memed further. Apparently at some early stage it got adopted by an autism community for reading as autistic(?) and gained a friend ‘btw’ or ‘by the way’ that is interpreted as ADHD.
Some people hate it, it seems, claiming tbh projects infantilisation of autistic people. I don’t agree, but I don’t really want to fight them over it. I just think it’s cute and one should pick the headcanon they like and ignore the rest.

22·2 years agoWhat exactly is hard about it?

I am sure Wikipedia has a list…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_landing#Late_20th_century–Early_21st_century_uncrewed_crash_landings
Aaand right. I think I remember a couple spent rocket stages and debris hitting it that isn’t listed, but there shouldn’t be much more that would classify as a ‘vehicle’.
