  • Kill all the billionaires -> another crop step in to fill the power vacuum - likely more likely to hire excellent security teams.

Revolution, overthrow capitalism -> the power hungry psychopaths who wanted to be billionaires pivot and seek positions in seats of government power. They continue living lives of opulant luxury on the public largess, and propagate fossil fuel and factory farming industries since this is one of the ways they skim their wealth from the public coffers.

Reform, throw out all the opulant bureaucrats. Maybe murder them. Introduce a new level of transparency in government. Install leaders who follow the public will, even to their own detriment. But the public will likes things mostly the way they are, and doesn’t want to give up their cars because they are used to them and see them as a symbol of their success in achieving whatever socioeconomic status, and doesn’t want to give up meat because meat is delicious. Because everyone likes getting things for free and the elected representatives do exactly what the public demands, entitlement programs grow rapidly while taxes stay the same or get lower. No one does work, because perfect communist utopia provides people with all their needs, so people just spend all their time driving cars and eating meat. A few do-gooders talk about how we are destroying the environment and going bankrupt. Everyone tells them to shut up and stop being nerds.

Economy collapses due to no incentive to work. Everyone admits that capitalism was pretty flawed, but was still pretty good at getting people to build houses and shit even when they would rather be driving cars and eating meat. Start capitalism again, but with better rules about lobbying and regulatory capture and all that jazz. Also, better education and support for children so the next generation grows up less fucking stupid. Elect good politicians who are good at spinning necessary hardships to their constituents. Apply a carbon tax to meat and gas and give people the tax money directly, because most people feel like they come out ahead when they get free money.

  • Good assessment.

Apple, in large part, is a luxury brand. Their biggest and most important advertisement is their users - people who want and can afford a glamorous, high end lifestyle, and their acolytes. So these are the people Apple caters to. If your phone is more than a year or two out of date, you are no longer a customer who functions to represent the luxury Apple brand - you are just a follower, who contributes insignificantly to the company’s revenue stream. So keeping parts on hand to repair your phone, and employees trained to do the repair, is money down the drain.

  • I think that you make some good points. But I take issue with your third point. People lie about things to researchers (or simply don’t know have some sort of self-knowledge) all the time. This is the whole concept of “revealed preference” in economics. Someone can say that they care about sweatshop labor, but do they actually make any effort to avoid buying products produced in sweatshops?

Not questioning the experiment subjects’ stated sexual identity just neuters the whole point of the study: is homophobia driven by repressed homosexual desire. If it is repressed, we should expect subjects to say they are straight even if they aren’t. Could the methodology be flawed? Sure! But there is nothing wrong with trying to actually measure the homosexual attraction of someone who says they are not so attracted.

  • I did this calculation a while ago (didn’t include hot dogs, because 🤮). But whey protein absolutely stomped every other protein source in terms of cost effectiveness. This really isn’t surprising considering it is a dehydrated, shelf stable source of pretty much pure protein, which also (iirc) is a waste product of cheese making. So you are basically buying something they want to give away for free, which has no cost to keep it cool, no need to move product before it spoils, no additional weight of water or bone to transport. They just add some flavoring and sweetener and bam! You’re jacked!

  • You aren’t wrong. But being a social media influencer is something almost no one would accidentally fall into. People who do it intentionally are doing it to chase a dream of fame and fortune and glamor - but because there is a limited amount of attention in the world and it is highly concentrated, you are really rolling the dice on a dream if you decide to commit to it. There is a very high probability that even if you put your whole heart and soul into it and did everything perfectly, you will still never achieve much more financial success than a child’s lemonade stand.

It’s basically the same thing as wanting to be a blockbuster film actor or a rock star or an NBA player. If you are struggling and unsuccessful… Well yeah, that’s exactly what everyone told you would happen. Go get a different job. And if you are successful and famous and making tons of money - “oh no, boohoo, it must be so hard to be successful beyond your wildest dreams.”
