Centralized platforms, including the big federated ones, might be required to institute this. We’ll have to wait and see. Usually laws define the words they use. So they’ll have to define “social media” and “age verification” and what does and does not apply. After it’s out, then it’s up to the courts.
I’ve been watching the Section 230 discussions in the US, and they don’t want to wipe away what’s there because they want to protect smaller platforms, but they are looking to amend it to add additional wording for size, revenue, etc.
Also, there’s NOTHING stopping you from running your own service and hopping on. Honestly this is why I want to see self hosted plug and play devices for the Fediverse. You don’t need age verification if you run it for your family and know everyone’s age.
These age verification laws will work on some folks, but I think the vast majority of folks will just be pushed to the outskirts. And honestly, we’re it. This could be a boon for the Fediverse.
A bit different, but if you like Fedi Mapping tools there’s also Atlas by Ben Pate, built on his Emissary.

Fixed! :) TY!

This is even bigger news. Looking at the Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compact
There are 45 Pending. South Carolina, PA, Kansas and Arizona all have bills in committee as of about the last 12-16 months.
This could actually happen. That’d bring it to 267. So they’d only need 4 to put it over.
EDIT: Fixed 167 to 267.

I’ve been in proton for about ten years, I think? I am a paying customer, and one of the first things I did was grab emails for my kids when they were born. But maybe they won’t even need them. You could also just get a domain and have access to all names.
I don’t think it’s a terrible idea, but it feels kind of odd for sure. To each their own though.

Awesome! James has an active community in matrix if you need help or have recommendations and things. :-)

I don’t have a 3D printer, but I love the Fediverse and wanna show off other people’s creations. James will be talking with me and explaining stuff. So stop by and ask him any questions you have. I’ve been debating running an instance of Manyfold as a general purpose instance, but wanted to do WOMML first. Also I don’t know how much request there would be for it.

Stunning.

At this point countries outside of the US see this as a security vulnerability. The EU has mandated open formats. They’re all in on open source. They’re looking to spend more money in open source. Trump certainly did what I was hoping he would do, which was to show the world Big Tech can’t be trusted. They don’t be going back. They want software security, digital sovereignty.
Keep up the food work y’all. We’re changing the course of history.
We’re winning! Keep up the food work everyone. I know the EFF won’t be leaving the Fediverse, so let’s make sure we’re all doing what we can as well!

Have you tried it? I tried the mobile beta when they first announced it last year. I no longer have a Mastodon account though and ATM it only handles Mastodon. I’m on Bonfire. It was brilliant when I first tried it. It really felt line a magazine, which is what they’re going for. According to Mike when I had him on Fireside Fedi.

It’s not just Mastodon. MANY open projects are working on theirs as well. Bonfire (as well as others) are working on Circles. Surf has curated feeds. :) It’s built into the Fediverse. ;)

That looks gorgeous!

I was the American that spoke to and asked about allowing government control. I enjoy taking about this stuff. Though EU doesn’t directly affect me, I think we all need to work on this together.

Thank you for posting it. I was waiting in the wrong place. :D

Awesome! Joining this. Thanks for the share.
Can’t wait for federation
