  • It’s funny because within the past year or so people are looking at Zip Drives like it was the second coming of storage, like this novelty “vintage” tech. but as someone who lived through that age and owned at least 3 or 4 drives myself they sucked. They broke constantly. Like I said I went through at least 3 of them. Once CD-R/RW drives became affordable there was no looking back. and then DVD-R drives were just so much better.

If at the time you were dependent on them for storage or backups it was a crap shoot. Sure you could backup your stuff but would you eventually be able to retrieve said backups if your drive went to hell? was it even worth it at that point? no.

  • to be fair it was a console seller and A LOT of people bought the Wii just to play that at family gatherings and like inviting people over for dinner. My parents bought a Wii just for it and never bought another game for the Wii.

I was working at an EB Games when the Wii came out and a good chunk of people would just buy the console with no games attached to it. They just wanted Wii Sports. AND THEN when they brought out the new version of Wii Sports…man that thing sold like hot cakes.

  • The Matrix Resurrections.

I’m a fan of the Matrix movies, I like the first three even reloaded and revolutions. when those films came out I was all about them. I was insanely into the lore, bought all the extra media be it the games, the animatrx, the encyclopedia, everything. I even drank the damn powerade and had the phone.

Resurrections is a movie that didn’t need to happen and doesn’t change anything in the overall universe of the matrix.

    Spoilers ahead.

The Machines and humans are finally co-exisiting. great, fantastic. Now because the machines are allowing whomever wants to be unplugged from the matrix willy nilly they need a new backup power source. that being Neo and Trinity. Ends up that recloning them and keeping them in pods next to each other but actually preventing them from being together generates a metric shit ton of power for the machines. One human discovers this and is all “that ain’t right, we need Neo” and decides to free him. Why do they need Neo now in this time of peace? because he’s the One. that’s it. One can argue that the machines pull some douche nozzle style moves like making the old construct of Morpheus into an Agent but whatever. The Machines aren’t nuking the new human city, they’re letting people be unplugged, it’s all fine. Except ONE group says it’s not fine and even the leader of the Humans is all just leave it but they’re like no, can’t leave it. They get Neo out and now Neo is like “I need Trinity” ok cool lets go get her. But won’t that fuck up the machines power source I hear you ask? yes and…no apparently it won’t.

They go get Trinity, she’s now out, the machines try to stop them but other machines help them get both Neo and Trinity back to the real world annnnnnnd nothing changes. Everything was exactly how it was prior to the movie starting. That power source the machines needed? meh it’s fine they’ll do without. Will they attack the new humans home? nope. Will more people be freed? maybe but likely that will also stay the same. Neo and Trinity both say now THEY control the matrix buuuuuut the one machine AI that started this whole thing is left alone, nothing happens to them. not deleted, not repurposed, nothing. Absolutely nothing changes. not for the worse, not for the better, just TWO people are back together. that’s it.

plot wise the movie didn’t need to happen. It also throws out the entire purpose of the One that previous three films established out the window because I guess now the Machines no longer need to reboot the program every 100 years.

  • not really. it was a natural progression. with any online movement it always goes undergound > cool > profitable > user blocked > forced. we’re at the forced stage of social media. What I mean by this is at one point we found social media and even LLMs cool. companies decided they needed to capitalize on this cool new tech and make a buck out of so they in turn hammered ads and tracking into everything. the user eventually gets wise and blocks all of this while still consuming the product. So said companies now demand that world governments prevent people from out right blocking them so they can continue marketing to them and selling their data for a profit. They then mask this as “protecting the children”. All you have to do is look at whose financially backing these movements. Surprise, Surprise one of the top backers/lobbyists is Meta.

It moved quickly because it needed to move quickly otherwise the potential for lost profit was massive. LLMs are getting on board with this too because they’re not making any money and their best bet is to “age restrict” their bots so they an sell the users data. and user data from an LLM is INSANELY more valuable than say Facebook user data. Users are more likely to tell a bot things that they wouldn’t admit on social media…and there’s money to be made off that.
