politics @lemmy.world•Measles Took My Daughter. This Is What I Want Everyone to Know.
6·15 hours agoThe problem is that it’s 90% stories that don’t really lend themselves to partisan outcomes. Their fascism comes out only once in a while, when Sulzberger thinks it’s important.

Climate@slrpnk.net•In 2025, India's carbon dioxide output edged down, breaking a decades-long trend of steady increases. This is also the first time on record that emissions have fallen during normal economic conditions4·19 hours agoRural smoke doesn’t stay confined to rural areas. It’s worth getting rid of the pollution from burning fossil fuels; it just won’t be enough to solve seasonal smoke in India

Climate@slrpnk.net•Burning wood for power worse for climate than gas equivalent1·2 days agoUI design sharply increases the probability of behaving in this way; it takes a real fundamental rethink of the UI in order to change that. For what it’s worth, commercial platforms are increasingly pushing people away from providing a link, either by banning links like Instagram, or by having a feed ranking algorithm which discourages their inclusion (X, Facebook, others)
I don’t blame individual choices for something that’s largely a result of platform design.

Climate@slrpnk.net•Burning wood for power worse for climate than gas equivalent2·2 days agoHow people treat the news is a result of how the UI on reddit, lemmy, and social media is designed. It’s not appropriate to blame people who don’t have control over that

Climate@slrpnk.net•Burning wood for power worse for climate than gas equivalent10·2 days agoThe problem is that a huge chunk of the online audience only ever sees the headline. Click-through rates hover around 2% and of those who vote or comment, only about one in four has clicked the link.
It’s not a crazy concern, but definitely should be expressed more clearly.
There is a reason I quoted the key paragraphs in the post.

politics @lemmy.world•Who’d have thought a fossil-fuel shill like Trump would be the one to spark a green revolution?
8·4 days agoThe reality of a first-past-the-post system is that it is far easier to co-opt an existing party than to launch a new one. The latter approach usually means handing power to the people you dislike the most

3·5 days agoYeah, the US put in place policy to support batteries for electric vehicles, and the policy got yanked by Republicans while the factories were going up. So a lot of them are planning to produce batteries for the stationary storage market now

World News@quokk.au•Colombia convenes climate ‘coalition of the willing’ to break global fossil fuel deadlock
1·5 days agoThe key problem with the UN COP process is that it can only act by consensus, which in practice is usually treated as requiring unanimity. So you can Saudi Arabia or the US to block any meaningful shift away from fossil fuels.

Look at the nasal mist vaccines for your kid. Slightly less protection, but no needle. And you can get them by mail order and administer at home so that you don’t need to organize an outing around the vaccine
