Technology@lemmy.world•Stepping Away from Streaming with the Innioasis Y1 Digital Audio PlayerEnglish
1·il y a 17 joursEvery smartphone platform has media player apps available that can play locally stored media files. Seems a better idea to me to use the device already there just in a different way.
There’s also plenty of great media player hardware on the used market if people really must have a dedicated device for this.

Apple@lemmy.world•Apple Has Given Up on the Vision Pro After M5 Refresh FlopEnglish
4·il y a 21 joursI was at an expo once and a marketing guy I was with said similar as we passed a VR booth. He said that VR users looked like people flailing their arms around with buckets in their heads, and that it would be very hard to sell the experience to outsiders who hadn’t already tried it.
Unfortunately it also seems the use cases are still fairly limited even when people do try it.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How is Jellyfin on Apple TV 4K?English
3·il y a 21 joursI’m using Jellyfin with 2 Apple TV 4Ks, one newer and one older. As other commenters have said there is no complete official Jellyfin app for Apple TV.
Swiftfin is the in development new app for Apple platforms, but it still very incomplete. Basic video playback works, but there are a lot of missing features like music and live tv support. The interface is functional but still fairly crude, and in the current version there’s a lot of ugly overflow issues in the UI. Video playback has always been reliable for me though. It will improve as development progresses but for now it’s very much a work in progress.
The other option is Infuse, which has a much nicer and mature UI, but also isn’t fully feature complete for Jellyfin. It also a proprietary app with a subscription to unlock all features. I’ve tried the free version and it seems to work well enough, video playback was smooth.
I think there are few other small apps but I haven’t tried them.
I wish there were better options for clients as the Apple TV is the best streaming box I’ve found but the Jellyfin support could be better.

61·il y a 23 joursAFP has been long overdue for retirement. I do wish Apple would improve their SMB implementation though, it’s had performance issues and weird bugs for ages.

3·il y a 3 moisI’m using a Drayton Wiser thermostat, which uses WiFi but has a fully local integration via HACS. Has worked great for me so far.
Maybe it’s just me but it’s felt like a particular bleak January and February this year.
Happy to see some sun even if that also comes with the start of allergy season.

6·il y a 3 moisI have a smart water meter installed by the utility provider with a cloud integration, unfortunately the readings have a 24-48h delay so it’s no use for real time monitoring.
Unfortunately many parts of Sailfish are proprietary though.

8·il y a 3 moisWell that’s something I thought I would never see.
The school thing is a good point. We called hot meals at school dinners, that were served by dinner ladies.
But we also had packed lunches that we ate out of lunchboxes.

Technology@lemmy.world•Hazardous substances found in all headphones tested by ToxFREE projectEnglish
22·il y a 3 moisBPAs have been shown to absorbed through the skin. Headphones are increasingly worn for long, continuous periods. Unlike other plastic objects which are handled for shorter periods.
I’m not entirely convinced of the danger myself (tinnitus seems a bigger worry for headphone use to me), but I thought it was a matter worthy of further discussion.
Tea. Dinner only used for Sundays or Christmas.

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Why this school will ditch a shirt, tie and blazer from its uniformEnglish
2·il y a 3 moisI didnt realise how rich some of my friends were until I went to their house. The uniform made us all equals in the classroom
Uniforms have never done that in my experience, because there are plenty of wealth signifiers outside of uniforms kids will still notice (pencil cases, bags, PE trainers, mobile phones etc), and even the uniforms themselves are not worn equally. The rich kids have clean uniforms that get regular replaced each term, the poor ones had dirty and ill fitting hand-me-downs.

I’ve got an X220 as my secondary laptop, currently running Debian. It’s had several mods/upgrades and it’s still a very useful machine.
