I’m genuinely laughing out loud, such a wild comment out of left field caught me totally off guard. I don’t think I’ve seen such stupid malice in actual years

Anyone who has this strong of a reaction to something so inconsequential must be a deeply unhappy person. It sucks to suck.

Also, anyone who calls someone a ‘fag’ is a complete fucking moron. I doubt things will improve for them with so few brain cells to work with.

In what way did they troll me? Did somebody call them a fag or not? If so, I don’t care what their justification was, that person is an asshole.

There’s a high likelihood they sent themselves that message so they could screenshot it and go ‘Look what the Linux users do!’ It’s what OP appears to do, mostly given it’s what users like them often do.

I would also like to have nice little messages in my inbox. I run Linux though. Debian Stable to be exact. If you run anything else you are wrong and stupid.

Man, nobody can put “a target” on you for something you say on a public forum that people get mad about.

You guys want freedom of speech? Freedom of speech is also getting shit on online for something you say. You have a right to speak, not a right to be liked.

Man, I don’t like MAGA either. I think they represent pretty much everything that’s wrong with society today…

But for a community that talks so often about disliking echo chambers, it really seems like most Lemmy users want an echo chamber.

Lemmy has everything from libs to anarchists to tankies. If that’s an echo chamber I think I’ll survive without fascist voices in the mix. The North Korea apologists are bad enough.

That’s fair, I can definitely understand that position and agree with you on the NK apologists.

From my point of view, I think it’s more productive to interact with people I disagree with, in the (possibly naive) pursuit of changing their minds. If people are kicked out for their views, I’d imagine many of them will just double down and act like a martyr.

To be clear, I’m not saying we shouldn’t call these people out and downvote them – that’s why that function exists right? But maybe once in a while, something that we argue will resonate with them.

Of course there are limits to that approach, and this all hinges on the other person arguing in good faith. Based on the OP’s post history, I’ll admit that I may be barking up the wrong tree in this case.

I honestly think there’s essentially zero chance of any argument resonating with someone who identifies as MAGA at this point.

I’d say there’s more danger to letting them into spaces to push hateful shit than there is benefit in the moonshot chance that one of them might hear an argument that resonates.

See, I’m torn. On one hand, I feel like this ‘us vs. them’ mentality contributes to the sort of tribalism that ultimately results in movements like MAGA popping up. If these people can only operate in MAGA-friendly spaces, they’ll rarely speak to anyone who disagrees with them, and will have no reason to reflect on their worldview.

Then I read the news. If current events aren’t enough to convince them that they’re misguided, I’m not sure that anything will.

I’m not sure I know what the solution is, but it’s been an interesting discussion.

That’s an optimistic perspective and I feel like we need more optimism these days. And maybe sometimes people do change their minds on things with social media discussions, though I think it’s already a difficult medium to work with.

For maga shit though, those people are basically cultists, and from what I understand it’s pretty much impossible to get people out of a cult without a personal connection helping them.

I’m currently in the process of converting over; have a dual boot and will probably leave it that way for the next year.

It is NOT, by any measure, that Linux is annoyance free and perfectly designed. It’s that Windows has been building up its annoyances in competition, so that going penguin takes a considerable measure of bloat off.

We’re at a point where some games are just performing better through Proton than running right on Windows.

I dual boot as well, and the only thing I’ve booted my windows install for was to work around a driver issue where my headset mic was no longer detected. Other than that, and troubleshooting why flat packs weren’t launching, my install of Bazzite has been rock solid.

Good plan. You’ll definitely find things you don’t like along the way and struggle. And having something to get things done in a crunch is useful. Just keep learning and in the end you’ll have all the tools you need and it’ll be great.

I mean sure, but imagine being that guy. With those brains, its hard to even cook pasta.

We should all celebrate having the good fortune of not being like that guy.
