I would just make bronze silver and gold badges and link them to a percentile of scores for the server (to calculate wider than for just the server you could maybe calculate each user’s upvote / downvote ratio first, then do percentiles based on that). So bronze might indicate a top 50th percentile, silver 75th percentile, and gold 90th. Then publish that info in the sidebar and possibly with other statistics such as what the minimum score for each percentile currently is for the server. You could also use a ⚠️for negative scores / malicious users and a ⚪ or ➖ or just not show an icon for users that like you said just don’t get a lot of upvotes.
I get the feeling that people are pretty keen to avoid the karma-farming aspects of reddit behaviour. Awarding medals based on upvotes feels like it takes us in that direction.
