If Bing pays them more I say do it. Most power users swap the default anyways and Firefox can use the funding. I can’t see Bing being anymore toxic than Google so it feels like a lateral move.

Problem is. Normies are willing to change to chrome to use Google instead of changing the default search engine.

The outrage over paper straws has shown us that most consumers are not willing to sacrifice ANY personal convenience for any sort of greater good.

A big chunk of those users probably don’t care or notice if they use google or bing- and they probably shouldn’t. Also I think the number of “normies” still using Firefox is dwindling to nothing anyway.

I think google IS the default search engine in FF…at least last time I updated my settings it was…I had to specifically change that.

Yes, Google is the default, what i say is that, as many normies do not change the defaults, they may dumb firefox and switch to chrome just to use google, that is a situation FF has being dealing with for a while.

Agreed. In the end I’m going to use neither Google nor Bing, so I don’t really care either way. If it helps Mozilla though, they should go for it.

If nothing else, this move can raise awareness that there exist alternatives to Google search

10% set as another default is just to avoid the stigma of being 100% google pions.

I can’t wait until vivaldi introduces a random default search engine feature on each right-click search. The browsers for sure contributed to the search monopoly but now is as good a time as any to right that wrong.

I didn’t realize people left Google as the default with Firefox. That’s one of the first things I fix.

Well, most users aren’t tech-savvy. In 2015, they ran a study and found that 40% of users don’t use any add-ons. Like, not even the obligatory ad blocker, and that was before Firefox started blocking things by default.
