During the trial it was revealed that McDonald’s knew that heating their coffee to this temperature would be dangerous, but they did it anyways because it would save them money. When you serve coffee that is too hot to drink, it will take much longer for a person to drink their coffee, which means that McDonald’s will not have to give out as many free refills of coffee. This policy by the fast food chain is the reason the jury awarded $2.7 million dollars in punitive damages in the McDonald’s hot coffee case. Punitive damages are meant to punish the defendant for their inappropriate business practice.

And she originally only asked for McDonald’s to cover her medical expenses ($20k) which they refused.

And she originally only had to take off the scalding pants which she refused.

Yes mcd was at fault for overheating the coffee. She could have easily taken off her sweatpants but instead this idiot sat there and let herself burn.
People are supposed to have sympathy for a lady who can’t do the bare minimum to help herself? No way burns would be as bad if you didn’t sit there and stew in it of your own accord.

I’m not excusing mcds here but every time I hear this story I care less and less for that woman.

The woman was 79 years old. Getting the pants on before her labia was fused together by intentionally overheated coffee was probably a fucking chore.

Listen, do this as a test, pour water a cup of water on your pants. See if your legs get wet. Better yet, heat it up or chill it (not enough to hurt yourself) and see how cold or warm your legs feel.
