I enjoy anime, however, I feel anime has been on a quality decline over the past few years. They are hollow shells of new seasons, clones of other popular anime, generic and uninspired stories, etc.

Anyone else feel this way?

P.s. I’m TIRED of highschool themed anime omg go away

Sturgeon’s Law has always applied, and when the industry has gotten a lot bigger to crank out more shows, the amount of shit feels more noticeable. And I think there’s definitely some memory bias here where we only remember the best shows from the past and forget the slop, but trash has always been there.

IMO, the best hits of the modern era are really damn good, my list of all-time favorites has become dominated by mostly shows from just the last few years. The Apothecary Diaries, Bocchi the Rock, CITY: The Animation, Dungeon Meshi, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Spy x Family, Takopi’s Original Sin, all bangers.

I’m not tired because there are too many good shows coming out to waste my time watching the bad ones.

The golden age has been over for a while now, but there are still shows with original ideas coming out. This stream of samey, uninspired shit has been around for at least a decade however and seems fairly constant to me.

That might just be a matter of taste. I probably watched way more shows from those decades, but some of my all-time favorites have been released in the last few years. Mob Psycho, City, Frieren, Dungeon Meshi and Dandadan are probably the best adaptations I could have hoped for and among the best productions I’ve ever seen. There are plenty of lower budget releases I love as well, like mono, eizouken or bartender.

Sure, there’s stuff that just doesn’t get made anymore like hand animated original mecha and original anime in general have been declining, but at least for me there’s more to watch than I really have time for.

Dandadan has a amazing opening and I know it’s a quality show but some reason the plot and characters weren’t that good for me.

The last scene of the latest season of Dandadan had some of the most beautiful stills I’ve seen in any anime.

I agree with OP and I don’t consume nearly as much anime/manga as my more avid friends, so I can’t speak to this as much as others. That said, I’ve also noticed this downwards trend towards rote formulaic generic anime (and general media as well). Sadly it just means there are more infrequent gems of unique and well produced anime, but it still happens.

It’s probably not for everyone. I love comedy shows, parodies, wacky style and mystery, so it’s perfectly tailored towards my tastes I guess. This might also be a personal thing, but I will say that episode 7 is one of the most well-directed and deeply emotional episodes I’ve ever seen.

We don’t remember all the slop from past decades, only the stand outs. I’ve watched so many OVAs from the 1980s that are just utter garbage.

Future generations won’t remember this decade’s slop either.

It makes sense though. A lot of the current stuff - especially isekai - is pure escapism. Giving the main character dark hair and (usually) dark eyes makes them easier inserts for their domestic audience.

Yeah but the hair style is the same. And I mean when style in which they draw that type of hair is the same. They could’ve just ended with a tad bit different approximation.

I love Trigun, BeBop, Champloo, GITS, and Evangelion.

But I also loved: Bocchi the Rock, Dungeon Meshi, Muishishi, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Spy x Family and Solo Levelling.
