Only for reading, easily available in EU, low budget: which e-ink device/distro?
I’m looking for something to read books on, copied over from a local collection (mostly .epub). Networking is not desired, a fast USB connection is. A good battery or exchangeable battery would be nice.
Not too large - maximum DIN A5 for the whole device.
I remember from years ago that some devices were deemed unhackable, some much more suitable to install Linux on.
I’d prefer to buy used, so something that was sold a lot in Europe is preferable.
I will not spend much more than €100.
In other words, some old commercial e-reader that was known for being hackable, I guess.
Please do not recommend the new PineNote, it’s (slightly) too large and way too expensive and I don’t think I need that much computing power.
Thanks in advance.

I switched from Kindle Whitepaper to Kobo Clara, no regrets - loving it.
Thanks for the advice.
It seems Kindles only exist to lure people into the world of Amazon shops. Not sure how they hold up hardware wise, or how usable they are if you never connect them to the internet; maybe you can shed some light as to why you moved away from Kindle?
They are hackable btw, but afaics all hacks require connecting them to the store first, or at least registering. Iffy.
Kindles are slow, they get slower every year (I suspect it is intentional). Kindles crash now and then, my Kobo hasn’t crashed once. The Kobo is quick, it has slightly better screen (I don’t experience any ghosting as I did on my Kindles). Also more tweaks on the Kobo (like how to turn pages). The power button has a much better placement, so you don’t accidentally click it. Kobo is also much more intuitive to use, partly because it doesn’t try to steer you to their shop all the time :] No ads, and perhaps the most important thing of all; it’s not Amazon.
I got Kobo this summer. Have been a Kindle user for years (three whitepapers, one a signature ed.),
Tried the Clara Color, but the screen doesn’t feel as good. You get a hazy’ish filter on everything due to the color layer. I think Clara BW is the bestest😁
Thanks for the breakdown.
Yeah I’m not interested in color e-ink at all.
