Honestly it’s a terrible name for an OS; hard to search for as / makes Web browsers think you’re entering a web/file address in. It’d also just sounds silly when said outloud, and it’s not easy to remember because it’s not a natural combination of characters
They need a rebrand to ease their diacoverability and build a decent name for themselves. I appreciate it’s difficult to find names that aren’t already in use but I think it’s current name is holding the project back.
In 2019, the developers claimed that the name was a “temporary placeholder” and that it would be changed as soon as all “necessary legal formalities” had been clarified. They wrote, “We should be able to announce the name for the OS soon.” Unfortunately, nothing has changed since then. At least they seem to be aware that it’s a bad name.
The FAQ on the website states: “It’s the current project codename, we are planning to introduce a new and more convenient name for our mobile ROM in a few months.” But that has probably been there for a long time as well.
What could these “necessary legal formalities” be that are making it so complicated?
Trademark law. It can be a pain in the ass, especially if you can’t think of an original name.
Eos is the name of the greek goddess of dawn. I find it really fitting.
Just search “eOS”?
Not really a solution:
I don’t see the difficulty in saying “slash e OS”
Or as we call it in swedish, “snedstreck e os”.
I’ve been daily driving eos for a few years now across two phones. I also bought a Busted pixel tablet, fixed it and flashed eos on it.
Its always showed you how bad the data leaks were for which app and to which platform.
Now they do it as a notification, which is annoying. Worse for me, I’ve got shelter installed so I can put MS teams, intune etc into a work profile, so now there are TWO notifications running at all times.
So, with KDE connect, tesla, tailscale… That means that the least number of notifications running are 5. I hate it.
Eos is awesome though. I can’t recommend it enough. You all should be running it.
Regarding the notifications, if it turns up and you long press on it, you get into the settings and can turn it off. Somehow had to do it couple of times but now since more then a week I don’t get them anymore.
Yeah I agree with you, they probbaly thought would be a nice feature to make people aware of tracking. But as nearly every up has dozens of trackers it gets annoying.
For me the summary on the left page is enough.
Agreed, it’s widget is fine. Also if you haven’t discovered the launcher Fossify Launcher yet. Worth a look. Returns /e/os closer to vanilla android. Let’s you place widgets where you want.
