Personally, I found the whole trump thing enough of a reason to finally switch from Gillette razors to a safety razor. Bit of a learning curve but not half bad. And it feels cooler shaving with something you could sort of hurt yourself with.
How about you?
Windows 10 -> Linux:
- I really dodged a bullet not using Windows 11 … is what I would say but just after switching I was told I have access to a free year of updates for Windows 10.
- Linux has not been smooth sailing but it’s been manageable, still trying to find a distro that’s secure, stable, and simple.
- I also had to try to teach someone Windows 11 recently which went about as well as you’d expect.
American candy -> Local candy:
- Less candy = more health and more money. Overall a complete victory.
Microsoft Outlook to Proton Mail:
- I CAN FINALLY ENABLE 2FA.
iOS (10 years old) to GrapheneOS (on a used phone):
- I CAN NO LONGER ENABLE 2FA (on my government services, Proton Mail works fine).
- For once I feel actually good about my phone rather than begrudgingly tolerate it.
Bluesky to anonymous frontend:
- Less Twitter arguments.
American streaming services to foreign services:
- Less stuff to watch means I’m less overwhelmed by choice.
I’ve started taking steps to switching to linux too! My lil memory stick just arrived the other day so I guess it’s time to start backing stuff up and preparing the switch!
Can I ask what you mean by anonymous front end instead of Blue Sky? Is that another way to pick and choose your BlueSky content? There are definitely some fun/interesting accounts I’d like to follow but there was just too much rage bait there for me to really enjoy myself using the app.
This is what I’m using. May not be the best one, I just picked something at random basically.

german spotted :D
That’s an insult. I do speak German but I am not German! There’s 5 more countries with German as official language or one of the official languages!
i didn’t want to insult you :) i just noticed that people from the DACH-Area don’t really torrent - which is understandable with these draconic fines.
No fines in my country, downloading for personal use and making copies for personal use is perfectly legal.
I moved my Wordpress host from some US host to hosthero and changed the domain from reannlegge.com to reannlegge.ca.
I have an unlimited email address package with my domain so I can create new email addresses for every thing, I get next to no spam but when I do get spam I can close the email address.
I moved my passwords from Apple to 1password.
I moved my cloud storage away from Apple to stormweb.
I use the app Unwatched to watch YouTube it blocks ads.
I use ecosia instead of Google, sure it currently is just a skin on Google but I believe they are going to be changing their agent sooner or later.
I canceled my cable (for sports) and just got TSN streaming.
I cancelled all the streaming services and replaced it with the *arr apps, and CBC gem.
Most of my food products are Canadian.
I stopped using Reddit and replaced it with Lemmy.
Melitta coffee filtersTechnivormNeither are American companies, but Melitta manufactures theirs in the US.
I was mostly de-Americanized already (I’ve been distancing myself from the USA and US products since 1999), but this year has me completely de-Americanized. The only American product I use is the Android that’s in my phone, but that’s still out of reach of Google because it’s not an American phone. (And when I get a new phone it will be HarmonyOS based likely, not Android. I’m just not going to throw away a functioning phone after the horse has run out the barn.)
The last item I ditched was Coke Zero which I was drinking from habit without thinking. Someone pointed out that it was American, I stared at it and realized that I’d screwed up, so found a really nice iced tea to replace it.
