Is the French more targeted than the translation makes it out to be? Because “stupid bitches” in English is not what I would consider a slur.

“B**ches” can be considered a slur in some circles as it’s used to target women who fight for feminism.

That said, the word in French is not really used that way, and has a direct masculine equivalent in a way the English version does not.

IMO it’s insulting but not a slur

Edit: Also “slurs” are not a thing in France, the best characterization you’ll get for the n-word for example would be “insulte à caractère raciale”, so racial insult, which is also illegal. But there is no common denominator between this, and the word f*g or insults targeting other minorities, each are qualified by who they insult and generally illegal for who they target.

The French word is more akin to the English C word, at least etymologically, which makes me wonder how high it ranks in terms of French profanities.

I think most English speakers know where the B word falls with respect to the C word (and say, something like the worst racial slur), but I have no idea where on that scale the French word falls.

Either way, I’ve definitely heard both English translations be called misogynistic, and I think that would qualify those words for “slur” status. I can’t imagine the French word is thought of any differently.

I’m sorry, but is “dumb bitches” really a slur? It’s a nasty insult for sure. Crude and rude. But a slur? Degradation of the value of language.
