I really wish we could de-car most American cities. The big parking lots can be on the outskirts if they are needed at all (ideally not)
It’s really hard when everyone is driving. After all, you need parking lots when you need to drive. If y’all could instead WALK just like we do in Europe, it would be much easier. I think it’s better for American cities to start with offering better public transit option.
I think at this point you are going to have to completely change zoning laws. We need work and businesses mixed throughout our residential instead of areas far away. Then people would naturally not need a vehicle.
problem is, in most of america the zoning (and local government as a whole) is essentially just weaponized by the local real estate barons to secure their fiefs from interlopers
It is strange how all our choices are engineered by corporations.
I live in a US metro that has decent public transit (definitely not ideal for everyone here, but pretty good for my needs) however after numerous incredibly sketchy encounters including being jumped and assaulted at a train station, I finally got a car after being car-free for more than a decade.
Good transit infrastructure is worthless when it can’t be made safe because it’s a magnet for the countless untreated mentally ill people in American society. We have far bigger problems in the US than simply a lack of will/funding to build out public transit.
