You made me think I accidentally opened up the Nextdoor app.
This is an unpopular opinion indeed, even though you see people chiming in and agreeing here they are very much the minority as referenced by all the people who love watching those events or launching their own.
All fireworks are banned where I live, and this past 4th and New Year’s Day folks found out the hard way that law enforcement is using drones to identify violations, routing officers to hand out fines and confiscate people’s caches (and sometimes make arrests depending on what’s in their possession). Living in a forest, we have zero tolerance. Nobody wants to get burned out.
They are 100% banned where I live. Doesn’t stop the thousands of people who light the em off all around me every year.
Fireworks have been a part of Independence Day celebrations since the very beginning. Does OP mean a total ban to include professional public fireworks display or just for personal use? Because a total ban would definitely be unpopular.
Only the official ones done by the fire department should be allowed, aside from maybe some very low level sparkler type stuff. These jackasses launching mortars in cities at 2 AM should face consequences for their actions.
Personal fireworks are mostly forbiden in France but each city and town organise a professional firework show for either the 13th or the 14th of July instead. Much better than what you can buy and everyone can enjoy it
Finally, an unpopular opinion
I’d be okay with them being allowed on the 4th, just no other day of the year.
At least limited to one day, you can plan to deal with them (pets, PTSD, taking the next day off work because you’re so got-danged tired from “boom boom boom” until 4 in the morning, etc).
absolutely correct they should ! and sadly for those struggling with PTSD or the thousands who are injured yearly, this is still an incredibly unpopular opinion.
Don’t forget the vast amounts of sulphur put into the atmosphere. In the UK Nov 5th produces more sulphur than the rest of the year combined. Sulphur makes acid rain.
They are illegal in the city limits of where I live. I have a neighbor who has a years supply and randomly lets them off all year. And by randomly I mean, 2pm on a Tuesday, 4am Thursday morning, 8pm Sunday, pick a day, pick a time, spin the wheel, no one ever knows when or why this psycho does this. Immature people think blowing shit up is cool.
I have that same neighbor, and I hate them. Replace 2pm on a Tuesday with 2am, though.
Tonight it was 9:30 pm. And just one small cannon went off.
Ok, you win. Didn’t have that, but it was also Thursday.
Also, based on the downvotes, maybe our neighbors are on Lemmy? haha
I think you might be correct. And they can downvote as much as they want, just stop blowing crap up.
there are some alternatives popping up like drone light shows (which can do some interesting displays fireworks can’t?) and if they got popular enough maybe people wouldn’t feel a need for fireworks as much
But thuh exploshuns remind me of war
I love fireworks so this was a very tough upvote for me.
That would literally have no impact on the number of fireworks lit where I live.
I wouldn’t ban them outright but I would make it required to register events where they were going to be used and ban them outside of that. The majority of house fires and injuries with fireworks happen in residential areas and those are also the ones where people with PTSD and animals are affected the most.
