Hmm… In school they would be taught some magic that is not really useful but that “has pedagogical value.” At work they’d be forced to use the magic that the market demands, but it’d be unimaginative and micromanaged. But they would have some hobby magics that are very amusing but slightly embarassing…

Yeah, in a world where fire magic existed, there would be fire magicians whose day job was being a human-powered blast furnace, blasting something with fire over and over. They wouldn’t be out having adventures, and the use of their magic would probably be heavily regulated.

Counterpoint, imagine society if 2% of the population had a gun with infinite bullets that they could never put down

I bet those guys would get exiled. Or, if it were a religious society, they’d be sent on “crusades” over and over until they were dead.

And don’t forget that after they die, some use for it will be found and it becomes the crucial underpinning of wizard society.

I mean… This is already true in most fiction I’ve read with wizards. lol

Like the one guy in Elden Ring who thought “what if we defended ourselves with magic?” Getting bullied by the other wizards in the academy whose idea of stronger magic was just throwing bigger boulders. Who’s laughing now? The bullies, cuz he died shortly after making his masterpiece 😔
