Not even. He officially left the Dems and registered as independent earlier this year.

Fetterman is bad on Israel-Palestine but I thought he was otherwise ok re: democracy, women’s rights, etc? Am I wrong? He’s not my rep so I’m actually asking.

Gabbard and Sinema are people that can be replaced with other democrats, but let’s not fool ourselves into thinking a more progressive person would likely get elected for Manchin’s West Virginia seat.

Manchin may suck, but he caucuses with the dems and puts the dems 2 seats over the majority line. Which means his existence currently allows the Chuck Schumer to replace Mitch McConnell, which means the dems control what comes to the floor in the senate.

They just can’t pass anything. But yeah, it is still better than what the other side would bring to the floor.

Don’t forget executive appointments. A GOP can block the appointment of normal judges and can fast track weirdos if someone like Trump is in office.

                It’s more than passing laws.

On the one hand, this matters because it allows the Senate to actually approve qualified judges to the federal bench, instead of the insane ideologues the GOP puts there.

On the other hand, all the federal judges in the world mean very little when SCOTUS is as thoroughly corrupt and extreme-right as it is, and has no issue overturning whatever cases they want to achieve the decision they’ve already arrived at.

On the other other hand, Manchin got to obstruct otherwise-popular legislation from either passing, or even being brought up for a vote merely by threatening to vote against it.

On the whole we’re definitely better than we were before Biden took office, but I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on Manchin. The successes of the Biden administration are despite Manchin, not because of him.

Then re-registered as a Dem when Biden was about to drop out. Then re-re-registered as an Indie when he realized he wasn’t going to get handed to nomination over Harris.

        Honestly, I’ll take it.

Dude could be a Home Depot Halloween skeleton for all I care. He caucuses with the Dems, which means that he helps push the Dems over 50% in the senate, which means the Dems control political appointments and what get brought to the floor.

I’ll take him over Mitch McConnell back in power.

The fact that Biden called for this exact same thing and Manchin was ok endorsing him but has to make a big scene when a non-white woman calls for doing the same thing basically tells you everything you need to know about Manchin

I think there are more differences between Kamala and Joe besides melanin levels and genitalia structure but okay I guess

Edit: Oh, I guess Kamala really is Biden in an Indian-African-American woman’s body after all, nvm

Why not just make the filibuster what it used to be and require the people who want to wield it to hold the floor for hours upon hours with no break? Some of it was silly. Some of it heroic. Either way, it required someone to truly be willing to stand behind their beliefs and, thus, was used much less often.

I also liked the idea of a minority vote (2/5) to sustain a filibuster. If you don’t have 40 supporters, on the floor, then the filibuster ends.

Conservatives don’t typically have these, and the ones that do know how unpopular they are. That’s why they fight against any attempt to reign it in.

This seems like such a fair way to add some discomfort to filibustering and making it a bit less appealing.

Republicans can endorse Harris all day long and I’m here for it.

Manchin endorsing Harris would have actually done her a disservice.

Manchin was not going to endorse her anyway.

It’s 42 days to the election, people are voting, if he was going to endorse her it would have been at the convention.

I’d seen the quote, but not the withholding of endorsement. Well, I guess he’s going to join the ‘both sides bad’ crowd.

Still. What does his opinion matter? He’s leaving the Senate next year so his proper alt-Right replacement can take over…
