Props to the mods over there!
Not gonna link the names, but for real, these guys belong in some kind of hall of fame. Stay strong, fuck /u/spez.
edit for future people: It looks like the android subreddit made a whole server! It can be found here: https://lemdro.id/
Makes a lot of sense since it’s a sub for power users. The proportion of 3rd party app users is probably among the highest at Reddit
yup .
It’s so nice to see some subreddits sticking to their guns and ideals and push through until real change happens! r/Nintendo is still down too, which was a nice surprise when I was looking around to see the state of my subs on Reddit.
Oh wow, /r/nintendo stayed down through a Nintendo Direct that announced a new Mario game? That’s a lot more chutzpah than I’d expect from a subreddit focused on a game console.
That’s indeed impressive.
r/Games didn’t even have the balls to shutdown because “summer game fest is more important than a protest”
Hot damn they mean business. NICE!
Damn that’s amazing. Lot of the subs I expected would be locked down like /r/pcgaming, /r/pcmasterrace, and /r/buildapc are the ones who ended up not caring despite thinking it’d align with the values of openness when it comes to hardware and software. I suppose it isn’t a surprise given that they were probably the ones buying scalper prices for GPUs and then scalper prices from nvidia themselves. Even /r/patientgamers who are supposed to be patient… were not patient enough to rush to go back to normal like they were snatching up preorders.
But, it’s /r/Nintendo that ended up stepping up to the plate. Respect.
r/Nintendo is still down too, which means even Mario’s had enough of spez and his bullshit.
And that dude has been talking crap/barrels from Donkey Kong going on 40 years now.

Fuck yeah. Love hearing more of this news!
Is that the official Subreddit for Nintendo? Or is it a fan base made?
If it is official that’s a big deal. 🤣
For the record, I know this because I’m going through my old comments and turning them into ads for lemmy 😅
Just a heads up
Go to reveddit.com and throw your username in there. Check if your comments aren’t being shadow removed.
Not much you could do about it, tho, but I noticed that the comments I edited to make an ad for Lemmy were all removed. They show up for me, but for other users it shows as “removed”.
Reveddit lets you know that.
Just checked mine. Apparently, some of my edited comments were removed, while others stayed up (with identical content).
Subreddits where my edited comments (in new) were removed unconditionally:
- /r/linguistics
- /r/nottheonion
- /r/memes (only commented in that subreddit for a short time frame, so whatever auto-removal there is might only apply to edits to old comments)
- /r/eu4 (lots of removals, but 1 edited comment survived, no idea why, it’s neither the youngest nor oldest edited comment there)
Partial removal subreddits:
- /r/facepalm (some edited comments survived, at least one was reversed, didn’t notice a pattern, might be based on user reports or depend on which mod sees it)
- /r/pettyrevenge (edits of comments younger than about a month were removed, edits of older comments survived)
Also, looks like some subreddits that were private when I ran the edit script (like /r/MadeMeSmile) have since gone public, so I’ll have to re-run Power Delete Suite.
I’ve had the suspicion about my comments ever since I’ve posted kbin ads (only twice). Timely comments fitting the thread and zero reactions while the one I replied to gets 1000s of upvotes.
Oh well, it’ll be over next week anyway. Prepare for the wave!
Well played, Sir!
Doing a great service for the people. Reddit doesn’t deserve to keep content from people given how poorly they’ve treated the community as a whole
Agreed. I’ll use powerdeletesuite to edit all my posts/comments to this when Sync for Lemmy’s out in a few weeks:
Reddit has killed off third party apps and most bots along with their moderation tools, functionality, and accessibility features that allowed people with blindness and other disabilities to take part in discussions on the platform. All so they could show more ads in their non-functional app.
Consider moving to Lemmy/kbin, two better and compatible alternatives to reddit (picture explains why) that many subs and users have moved to: sub.rehab
Reddit Sync’s dev has turned the app into Sync for Lemmy (Android) instead, and Memmy for Lemmy (iOS) is heavily inspired by Apollo.
You only need one account on any Lemmy or kbin server/instance to access everything; doesn’t matter which because they’re all connected. Lemmy.world, Lemm.ee, vlemmy.net, kbin.social, fedia.io are all great for example.
I hope you’re not doing this manually. Power Delete Suite can also do edits.
👀
I’ll check that out lol
So it can do edits without deletes?
I think so, right? There’s a field to edit your comments. Unfortunately I can’t try it anymore since my posts are already deleted and I don’t intend to post anything.

I think thats overly harsh, they do a little apart from ruining things. But mostly they ruin things, no doubt.
Welcome! :)
huh? what is a reddit? who is a “Spez”?
😁
One of the mods of /r/Android here (/u/cooldude5500), tbh I’ve barely used reddit after the spezification. 'tis a nice change…
spezification
What a fantastic word
/r/android is resisting spezification
Honestly I feel that the android community here on lemmy is more active than the r/android subreddit before the lockdown
way more active and less random spam imo, seems more interesting than actual r/android lol
I’m perfectly fine with less total content if it actually stays on-topic.
What do you mean? You’re telling me you don’t want to watch reviews for the weekly Oppo/Honor/Xiaomi/Nubia phones with identical specs?
It’s like old school r/android.
As it should be, all the subreddits that was part of this protest should have done that and not given the end date
A logic move, power users after all
Still super shitty that sync for reddit is vanishing soon. While it’s great that apparently it’s getting re-leveraged as a fediverse reader, still amazed at how poorly this API transition happened because Spez wants to be a knob
In case you’re stuck on Reddit, the Revanced Team decompiled the APK and made a version of Sync that lets you use your own API key. I’m not sure how well that will work, but I’m definitely going to try it out after The Final Day
It would be better if people switch to another platform instead of keeping supporting reddit.
Aw yus, that’s exactly what I wanted to hear. When I heard that they didn’t want to change the app to allow you to use your own API key I was scratching my head wondering why, I could exist under that daily API rate.
I might give it a go
I may be wrong but in one of the threads it was said that App Developers allowing users to use their own API Key was also against the agreement
Yeah, but it’s not the developer doing it, it’s a 3rd party who took apart the app and let YOU modify it.
Does that mean Reddit will be sending us fat API bills for using our own API key?
Yesn’t. If you use it barely then no, those bills will be tiny. If you are a poweruser, it’ll get expensive quickly.
They don’t have a payment method for me, so gl getting me to pay that bill, anyways. I think I’d rather go to collections than give Reddit a dime.
Got a link? Or is it just a patch on ReVanced manager?
It’s just a patch in the Manager. You may need to download the free version APK from somewhere like APKMirror and patch that though (you can also disable ads so it’s like the Pro version), as there don’t seem to be any Pro APKs and you can’t patch an installed app without root.
I’m gonna hold off on this, since one of the steps involves making your own “app” in Reddit’s interface that’s tied to your user account. If Reddit’s admins consider bypassing the API shit this way to be a violation of TOS, that’s a can of worms I don’t feel like opening just yet.
I was hoping it’d be like Twidere for Twitter, which uses the client ID and secret of the official iPhone app.
Admins are going to be taking them over soon. I got the threatening modmail on all my subs, even the really tiny under 1000 ones
I mean, they can threaten thousands of subs that they’re gonna take over… But with what manpower
Sadly most mods seem to give in the moment their existences as mods are endangered.
The fear of losing what little authority they have is a great motivator.
R/apple should have changed the rules to talk only about a specific fruit.
Meanwhile… At r/selfhosted…
I’m interested in doing this but I don’t want to have a computer/server running in the background 24/7. I’d do it if I could use like, an old cellphone though lol
There’s a Discord active and I believe at least 1 Lemmy community so at least there’s external options
My main point was that if there’s one subreddit that should of migrated fully to lemmy… it would be them. Practice what you preach. Granted they are probably one of the larger communities here on lemmy.
r/apple is not which I find very disappointing
Seems on brand of them
Typical average consumer does not care as long as they get to keep using the product. That’s likely the majority of Apple users, it’ll take a replacement (like this one) getting popular enough for them to notice and try it, otherwise on Reddit they’ll stay till death.
With apple aficionados, it would also take costing a lot of money to make them interested.
Nah, just a different colored bubble for their messages.
I expected r/apple to go on an indefinite blackout.
Props to the mods, but they are on borrowed time. It is just a matter of time before Reddit admins step in and take over the site. I just hope that replacement mods say enough to get the role and then immediately carry on.
That’s wrong. Reddit cannot find replacement mods that easily. Have you looked at r/interestingasfuck? It’s modless after a week, and technically closed because Reddit is too dumb to realize that they actually made the sub participate in the blackout by removing the mods. If many subs remain closed at the same time, it will be impossible for Reddit to find free replacement mods.
The estimated free labor done by mods is valued at around 3.5m a year, how are they gonna find that amount of manpower? And how are they gonna properly vet these mods in such short notice?
Mods already are carefully picked and yet slips happen often, if they rush a replacement (which they will have to do if they force new mods) then moderation issues will be a big issue on reddit
Mods already are carefully picked and yet slips happen often, if they rush a replacement (which they will have to do if they force new mods) then moderation issues will be a big issue on reddit Reddit admins vet mods? I just assumed it was always a boys club of who knows and likes who in the modding community.
I watched this happen on the britishcolumbia sub. They got too many reports or something about misinformation (my memory is unclear about this point, but there was some dispute about misinformation), so the admins closed the sub, posted a message asking for the community to select moderators, then completely forgot about the whole thing. The sub (a sub for an entire Canadian province) was closed for like six weeks. Then some random did a reddit request and they gave it to him, not the mods the community voted on. This random waited for a while, then started letting racist stuff through, and booted the old mods who objected to the racist stuff he was allowing. And Reddit made it all happen.
The idea of Reddit replacing even a hundred mods, in a single day, with anyone capable of the job, is laughable. They couldn’t do a single sub in over six weeks, and even after six weeks they fucked it up.
