I think politics play a very large role in life and that ignorance of it gives us outcomes like Trump, but I would like to hear more about what the motivation for the cats is if that’s also on the table.

Wanting to be able to exist in a social space online without 3/4ths of all discussion in that space being bleak political news isn’t the same thing as ignorance.

I posted about voting, I engage with political discussion, but lemmy is a very politics heavy platform, and while there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with that, you kinda have to manage your fatigue levels. You can only be but so upset, outraged and exhausted before it starts to affect you, and being burnt out and overwhelmed doesn’t yield productive political action

You gotta take breaks and balance paying attention with stuff that makes life feel worthwhile. If you don’t, eventually you just give up. Cats for a little while is kinda nice :)

Also worthwhile noting that not everybody on the English speaking internet is American ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It doesn’t matter how much trump is forced down my throat, it doesn’t change shit because I live on the other side of the world. A little bit of awareness and courtesy every once in a while wouldn’t go astray.

No no. Ignorance is not the same as stupidity. Ignorance is the lack of knowledge. Stupidity is the inability to use knowledge.

Every single day since 2016 we’ve had trump in our daily conversations. Every single day we’ve heard every stupid thing he’s done. Every tiny little thing he’s ever said. If news outlets had access to his toilet time, they’d play nightly audio of his poops. There is not a single thing about him that hasn’t been said 1000 times. No piece of information about him that isn’t out there.

And he doesn’t keep himself secret either. He stood onstage and said into a microphone, with cameras rolling, in front of thousands of people, with pride in his voice as he said it, that he would be responsible for the largest mass deportation innititive this country has ever seen. He said if he was elected we wouldn’t have to ever vote again. He said he would use the united states military if needed to “put down” the enemy within.

These are not the words of a man hiding facism. He put it on full display for over a year, and the votes came back that we as a collective country WANT that.

The information is out there in public. Reported on ad nauseam on a nightly basis for over a year.

Trump is not the result of ignorance. Trump is the result of weaponized stupidity.

You have a very cool philosophy and I thank you for sharing, but the definition of ignorance is not the same as unaware. To be ignorant generally implies to ignore the reality or truth.

American Heritage Dictionary has this to say about it:

            Ignorance:

            • The condition of being uneducated, unaware, or uninformed.

            • The condition of being ignorant; the lack of knowledge in general, or in relation to a particular subject; the state of being uneducated or uninformed.

            • A willful neglect or refusal to acquire knowledge which one may acquire and it is his duty to have.

I’d normally also include something like Oxford Dictionary definition but for some reason they’ve got a paid subscription model now.

It does list “the condition of being […] unaware” in the definitions you quoted. I think it’s fair to say ignorance can mean being unaware, but ignorance can at times also signify that it is intentional, or that a person is choosing to ignore information.

Though saying “ignorance is the lack of knowledge” stands true, regardless of whether that lack of knowledge is intentional or not.

I swear I’ve only seen meta posts talking about all the cats. I haven’t seen a single non-meta cat post.

Update (2024-11-23T01:52Z): It turns out that, to see the cats, one must sort by “Hot” [1]. I was sorting by “All” + “Active”, but, to see the cats, I must sort “All” + “Hot”.

[…] Active prioritizes many comments iirc, but on most of these posts I see few if any comments. Using Hot though, they can dominate a feed due to being highly upvoted.

Perhaps SJW is having federation issues. Anything related to personal blocks would be extremely unlikely, in my case.

The only cats I gave seen so far in my feed are maybe 3 from !cat@lemmy.world.

Update (2024-11-23T00:44Z): It appears that SJW is fine. See my comment here for more details.

You, like every other non-Lemmy.World instance right now, seem to be having massive federation issues, since if you view the community at the source there are a flood of cat pics, which SJW seems to know nothing about.

on the one hand, it’s annoying having so many photos of somebody’s cat(s) flooding your feed

On the other, after months of election dread and with at least four more years of misery for everyone who isn’t rich lying ahead of us – sure, bring on the cat photos. Good palate cleanser.

I did notice an uptick in specifically black cats. And I was kind of surprised to see it just came from !cat!cat@lemmy.world Normally when you get a high volume of one highly specific kind of content, it’s because a new community has been opened somewhere and the community creator and/or small group of early users are outright spamming it to populate it because communities that sit empty will inevitably remain empty. Of course what they’re doing is bombing the All feed to the point that people who might actually go “Oh hey there’s a black cat sub, I’ll subscribe to that” will block it because it’s the entire fediverse for 50 hours if they don’t.

I have seen this phenomenon back on Reddit, where everyone just started posting pictures of their cat to pay the “cat tax” because it was a simple bandwagon to jump onto. It’s everyone post their cat day. “Hey, I’ve got a black cat too. I want to play. My turn!” I just can’t be mad at that because it’s wholesome social fun but…it’s a problem with Lemmy itself that when a community has any kind of spike in traffic it just B-52’s everyone’s All feed for days.
