I’m really worried about the state of GTA 6 if and when it ever comes out. It’s all about money and not the games for Rockstar now and it’s been that way for some time.

Buying GTA 6 or not, for me, depends solely on one single factor. Is the singleplayer experience worth the price?

As far as I’m concerned, the multiplayer doesn’t exist. But if the singleplayer game is great, I’m not going to deprive myself of it to make a point. Good AAA games are hard to come by nowadays.

I’m really not holding my breath for a great (or even good for that matter) single player experience. No way to make money there.

So, one thing: after being forced to stop playing RDR2 cos it wouldn’t connect to their social club I’ll never, ever buy a game from them. Ever.

and this is why I’ll likely never buy another game from any company that uses microtransctions, in-app purchases, pay-to-win, rich idiots yacht fund, or whatever bs they call it these days… especially when these days they aren’t even ‘micro’!

I really don’t get it though. in-game purchases make every game just awful and yet people are spending 1000’s on them and it’s like how does anyone how that kinda money to waste when if I had that kinda money I sure as hell wouldn’t be wasting it on shitty pay-to-win game!

So hopefully if it turns out to be as shitty as people are starting to expect, how many people are still going to buy it…

I think it is important to distinguish pay to win microtransactions from cosmetic microtransactions. The latter are a great way for rich players to support the game and get bragging rights, while not affecting other people’s gameplay. Even ‘pay to win more easily’ can be fine if kept to a reasonable level.

Have there been any studios that have been loved, gotten way bigger, and didn’t become wicked greedy?

I wanted to say CDPR, but I guess they fell from grace with CP2077.
I’d still rate them as rather trustworthy though.

Santa Monica Studio has also stuck to their guns with the GoW games and Cory Barlog seems to be a beacon of hope in this dirty industry.

Also Nintendo have been semi-decent. Yes the games are costly, but expansion packs are usually worth the dough if released. They probably fall outside the scope though…

ngl, I totally forgot Nintendo existed when I wrote that comment, I feel like they still put in a ton of effort into their games and are mostly still loved too.

You missed the part “and didn’t become wicked greedy”. Nintendo is way shittier than any other gaming related company I know.

I guess they might be wicked greedy. Far from the worst gaming related company I know though. I mean just off the top of my head, I’m still a bit bitter about “Overwatch 2”. Paywalling heroes and calling it fair. Terrible battle pass. And the whole bait and switch with Modern Warfare 2. Promise a two year call of duty then rug pull after they made their sales. And the buggy messes that all those games come wrapped up in. Plus the whole sexual harassment lawsuits, but that’s a whole separate matter.

Maybe I don’t play enough Nintendo, but every time I’ve picked up one of their games, I don’t feel any pressure to spend extra on any microtransactions or pay more to get ahead of other people. I mean, I’m sure there are examples, but looking at other companies I’d say they’re decent by comparison.

I don’t play multiplayer games, so I missed the cases you mentioned.

And yeah, Nintendo isn’t shitty in that sense, they’re more like “we’ll happily ruin your life whenever we feel like there’s a copyright infringement”.

Oh ya, I feel that. I casually follow the smash bros scene (mostly ultimate) and sometimes Nintendo confuses me from how hard they try to shut that stuff down. Going after Project M, maybe Slippy, melee, tournaments in general.

My immediate thought would be Papyrus, who made the Nascar Racing games in the early 2000s, and has gone on to make Iracing. Though they technically don’t exist anymore the Iracing crew is literally the Papyrus crew now.

Valve (as a developer) has always been about pushing boundaries, not making money.

Half-Life showed you can tell a story and create a world without cutscenes

Half-Life 2 showed the power of using physics in a game engine as a gameplay mechanic

Portal showed the versatility and accessibility of puzzle games as a mainstream genre

Team-Fortess 2 showed the openess of a casual, class-based shooter

CS:GO showed the interest in a competitive shooter

HL:Alyx pushed VR to its edges in showing an interesting world and gameplay without feeling like a tech-demo

I haven’t played too many valve games. The only complaint I ever hear about valve is exactly what you said: they don’t release enough. There’s only so many left for dead mods I can play.

I’ve got to hand it to them. Rockstar is really addept at squeezing the most money out of a person while doing the least amount of work.

One thing I find intriguing is the total 180 in people’s opinion on this compared to when skull girls removed content from a game people had already paid for.

Personally, I hate when games remove content, and think it should always be an option to roll back your version to any previous update as a built in feature

I’ve quite honestly given up on them now that the Housers have gone. Very little excitement for GTA6.
