After the soviet union collapse many european countries just stopped caring. We don’t need soldiers or equipment anymore. Meanwhile in Finland, they kept their conscript service and bought more equipment from the bargain bins that were now available from other european countries. Finland has never been comfortable with the russians. Other Europe shouldnt be either. Time to gear up!?
I’d rather say it’s the exhaustion of 2 so-called world wars taking a giant dump on Europe and the countries within not wanting a third one doing the same.
Although we never even seriously discussed giving up conscription, we Finns also made mistakes. Like cutting down the war time troop numbers from ~500 000 to current ~240 000 in the early 2000’s. It did seem like a moderarely reasonable action at the time, but luckily it will most likely be remedied sooner than later.

But, when you gotta poop… you gonna poop.
Pure poetry
