From what I understand it’s some kind of self-censorship people are engaging in on major social media platforms in an attempt to stop posts with potentially ““problematic”” words being demoted. It leads to this sort of stupid arbitary brushing out of words.

I blame both the platforms for having shitty algorithms designed to whitewash everything, and users who are absolutely obsessed with engagement and likes on their posts so they censor the shit out of so many words. If you have to censor words like “die”, “kill”, “fuck” “nazi” etc. then there’s a big problem.

Fuck big tech, fuck advertisers, and fuck influencers.

The Tik-Tok inspired use of unalive has seeped beyond the boundaries of the app. It drives me crazy when people say that in real life. The dystopian vibes really start to hit when censored online jargon bleeds into IRL. For the sake of pushing past it - it makes me want to kill myself.

My solution is to block every individual who ever posts a meme censoring words. I know they didn’t create it, I don’t care, willingly censoring benign words (and sharing this behavior like it’s acceptable) is my line in the sand for dumb Internet bullshit and I will die on that hill. We must not reshape our language for this nonsense.

Downside is I’ll be having a quieter Lemmy experience soon, lol

There were no human races last time I checked. It’s strange that English is still saying people are a certain race.

Because the meanings of words can shift over time, and in English, the word “race” now has two different (though slightly related) meanings.

Well, three, if you include car races…

biologically no, but socially white supremacy is very much a thing and so is race. Israelis can be of any race therefore a blanket statement of racism against them is nonsensical since Israeli is a nationality not a race

            biologically no

Biologically still kinda yes in that most of the world was mostly reproductively isolated from each other for most of history, and as such something as hypothetically meaningless as skin color correlates with likelihood of a whole array of other genetic things.

For example, the bigger a threat malaria was in your ancestors’ part of the world the more likely you are to inherit sickle cell (which has a bunch of downsides but also makes you resistant to malaria). It’s the reason frequency of lactose tolerance varies based on where your ancestors are from. It also impacts organ transplant availability, because the organ compatibility markers are not uniformly distributed across all racial/ethnic groups.

none of the things you just listed are physical traits that race depends on. it’s purely based on perceived phenotype

Right, but because most of humanity has been mostly reproductively isolated from each other for most of history there is a correlation between expressed phenotype in the handful of things that we think of as “race” and a boatload of other assorted genetically linked things.

Like how dogs with certain eye colors are more likely to go deaf.

Mr. Tischler said that his client had “no prior history of violent or hateful behavior” and that he was cooperating with law enforcement. His client acknowledged the seriousness of the charges, he said, but had not been able to control his actions.

“At the time of the incident, Mr. Brafman was experiencing a severe mental health crisis which caused him to be in fear for his life,” the lawyer said in a text message to The New York Times. “It is believed that his ability to make sound judgments was significantly compromised.”

Yeah. What else is he supposed to say? The guy basically told the cops “Here’s exactly what I did. Also, I meant to kill them, because of their race.” Basically, all he can do is threaten to make them waste resources by dragging out the case as much as he can, to increase leverage to get as merciful a plea deal as possible.
