    Also, learning the language is very important, since there’s not much tolerance for “ex-pats” with a superiority complex.

    In Catalunya, that might mean learning two languages, since some Catalans don’t like it all that much when people speak to them in Castillian, but it’s also not that wise in Spain to know only Catalan. But yeah, my experience is that people accept you for what you are, as long as you’re not an entitled fool like the ones who used to clutter the Costa del Sol.

      I haven’t come across anyone who has given me more than a light ribbing about not speaking Catalan (I can read it just fine).

      Only something like 25% of people living in Catalunya have Catalan as their first language.
