The Copperheads were anti-Civil War Democrats who felt you could negotiate a peace with the Confederates.
Worth noting that at this point, the Democrats were the modern Republicans. So this would be like MAGA starting a new civil war, leaving the union, and Mitt Romney arguing that a peace could be negotiated.
