One-third of e-bike buyers who got their cycles through the now-depleted Colorado rebate fund are replacing two to three car trips each week with the battery-powered two-wheelers, a new state survey shows.
I’m a big fan of e-bikes as, imo, they are the best way forward for most american cities to move away from car-centric modes of transportation. As a Coloradan, I think these rebates were a great idea, but I feel like they still weren’t enough - people could only buy new ebikes from certain shops, and the ebikes being sold typically cost thousands of dollars. Shaving off a couple hundrend dollars is nice, but really not a huge incenive when most people will still need a car to get around.
What would be really nice is if, say, you could get further tax dedictions for riding the bike after purchase. This would necessitate some kind of tracking software… but idk, maybe a tradeoff worth making, especially since it would be opt-in.
If you need an incentive (WHAT?! 🌚) to actually ride the bike you bought with your own money - maybe that’s not a transportation vehicle you really need.
