Is it even profitable? I thought they were still at the point where it was going to get profitable real soon ™…
I don’t think so. OpenAI lost 5B this year and is on track to lose more than 10B next year.
At this point, maybe I should go back to reading more books and try to live as little online as I can. The internet is losing its usefulness for me. I will still use it for necessary purposes, but fuck anything that has to do with billionaire owned social media.
I started pretending I’m back in the 90s. Only I have the pokemon game I wish as a kid. I walk to the corner store and get some drink and snack. Head to a park or a mall and walk around. Maybe the downtown area for socializing. Even walked to the book store and baught a physical copy to read. It’s done wonders for my mental and physical health. Stop social media and go hike a trail. Everything is made up. Nothing really matters anyway.
It’s so sad. The internet was once a magical, fun place. Thank goodness for Lemmy.
I always thought that “zombie internet” was a more appropriate term than “dead internet.”
Robot internet
Robonet?
That’s what really confuses me. They make bot farms that create a shitton of slope, which is then consumed by a shitton of bots, and these bot farms are making ad revenue for themselves.
Who the fuck are these people paying for these ads and WHY? Bots ain’t gonna go to 7/11 and buy your snacks after commenting under your ads, and these 23 stray humans won’t make up for the costs.
It’s not that difficult… you pay an ‘ad tariff’ on every product you buy which companies then give to ad companies. So long as the ad companies can fake views that they can show companies that ‘line go up’ everyones happy… except you because everything you buy is double what it would be without advertising being rammed down your throat!
And the increase in product costs is just blamed on immigration, race or whatever other b/s people are stupid enough to believe. 🙄🤦♂️
It feels like money laundering with extra steps. Do criminals not just own laundromats anymore?
I learned a new word! Thanks, OP!
Here’s a fun one: Anemoia - nostalgia for a time you never experienced (from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows)
Heres another one! The opposite of solipsism is sonder.
that’s not a thing. it’s a made up word coined by a youtuber in 2012 who just makes up pompous, overly specific words that never actually get used.
( like literally, the AI generated dictionary article only references the blog, and has no actual examples other than mistakenly generated proper names that happen to be Sonder)
solipsism is an actual philosophical concept dating back centuries. and for this one there’s already a number of psychological constructs we have to discuss theory of mind.
Every word is made up. The fact that, centuries ago, the word solipsism was brand new did not detract from its value.
Having personally felt the sensation that is now called sonder, i am happy that someone coined a word to describe it. Like solipsism, sonder relates to theory of mind, and now theorists in that field have a concise tool to refer to something that used to take a couple of sentences to describe.
Without neologisms, a language is dead.
it’s one thing to coin a new word that gets used.
It’s another thing to walk around acting like the word your little brother made up is common place knowledge
Sonder is a poor relation to solipsism anyway. it sounds like an adjective for a feeling whereas solipsism refers to a nominal belief. it’s just irritating
It’s another thing to walk around acting like the word your little brother made up is common place knowledge
Did anyone here do that? It seems more like someone tried to teach someone something, and someone else said “NO, THAT KNOWLEDGE ISNT COMMON ENOUGH, SHUT UP”
Here’s another! When a word is the opposite of another, it’s called an antonym.
I knew about that one, except its origin was news to me
how is there an opposite to solipsism? what would that even be? an imagining of something that is real?
That was two. However, the only thing i know about those words are that their opposite
