    Explanation: As WW1 rolled up, there was the realization that bright colors were counterintuitive with the rise of accurate long-range small arms, making infantry-on-infantry combat increasingly a game of “Who sees who first”. Germany and Britain entered the war with dark-colored uniforms for this very reason.

    France, uh, did not enter the war with an appropriate uniform.

    They changed pretty damn quickly.

      And they only really changed because they could no longer access the alizarin dye which they imported from Germany.

        And within 2 years of the start they removed them because they were brass and that was needed elsewhere.

        Heard that the allied side knocked the helmets off Germans in trenches by shooting the spiky bit that stuck out from their helmets.
