Hot take, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they deserve all the hate they get. I don’t think bands like Nickelback and Linkin Park deserve even a fraction of that.

Sure, I despise Nickelback’s music, but are the guys in the band bad people? Not as far as I know. The current version of Linkin Park does deserve some hate for having a scientologist singer and for hawking NFTs (which people like Tom Morello and System of a Down guy have also done).

I prefer to reserve my hate for bands like Motley Crue and Aerosmith that have members who are abusers and pedophiles. Just making music I don’t like doesn’t really cut it.

Justin Bieber, btw? DUIs and SA accusations, look it up.

Want to know why Nickelback gets so much hate? Blame Comedy Central.

Colin Quinn had a show called Tough Crowd, and one time he had Brian Posehn on as guest and a snippet of him dumping on Nickelback got edited into the commercial for the show. The ad got significant airplay on the network, and as a result, the first time a lot of people really thought about Nickelback came about from hearing Brian Posehn trash them.

The worst you can really say about them is that they’re formulaic, but their formula is more varied and versatile than a lot of bands hailed as legends. Looking at AC/DC and KISS there.

Ah, so that’s where it came from! I knew it was one of those meme opinions (see also: acting like the word moist and pineapple pizza are both crimes against humanity) but I didn’t realize that it could be traced back to a singular event.

Well duh, that’s what it’s like for basically any other band. But do they get it as often or as intensely? Who else is as cool to hate as Nickelback? The only other band from that era I can think of who became a near universal by-word for bad music is Coldplay. They’ve also not fallen out of relevance like artists who held that dubious distinction before, but that’s more to do with the industry.

And no, I’m not sticking up for Nickelback. It’s not like Insane Clown Posse where it’s actually far more conceptual than everyone thinks, it’s just generic butt rock.

They’re all incredibly rich, I wouldnt worry too much about them. I dont really understand carrying water for rage against the machine or system of a down either. They are literally

But not even the cool underground version of it. These bands were and are huge, did endorsents and sponsorships and maybe they’d say something like ‘this corporate festival we’re playing, sponsored by the refreshing taste of Mt. Dew, is fucking bullshit cause they’re killing the planet!’. it’s the Cory and Trevor from trailer park boys of rebellious music. Also i dont like either of their music.

I mean, yes, Tom Morello is a bit of a melt sometimes, and when it comes to the crunch, they are multi-millionaires, but tbh I will always carry water for Rage. They’re kind of an exception to the rule imo, because they were so ahead of the curve musically — and therefore incredibly bankable — that they could say what they wanted. And Zack de la Rocha used that opportunity to openly support the Zapatistas (and Shining Path but the less said about that lol) and say that, actually, Mumia was right to shoot that cop. I defy anyone to find lyrics with better politics than Rage.

There are many people wishing death on bands and artists just because they don’t like the music, which I find excessive and not all of them are rich and famous either. Also stuff like that video where Nickelback gets stuff thrown at them, even if you don’t care for their music I don’t think they deserved that.

Genuinely wishing death on people for bad music is bad, the average nickleback experience doesn’t involve things being thrown at them. Its not like people are paying 300$ for a ticket just to boo them. I do also think that fun hyperbole has been lost when discussing music. I can recall when record stores existed and I had some musical common. Ground with one of the clerks but major disagreements within it and we would get super heated and cause he was 35 and I was 16, he paused in one of our first music arguments and said “just to be clear, we are getting this heated for fun right? None of this is personal and we are both aware that being this passionate about goth music is dumb” I said ‘absolutely’. We both just had a lot of fun going off hard about music. It’s fun to get really dramatic about bands when you are really into music. Tbf, How You Remond Me taken for what it is, is a really really well written hard rock pop song, im Canadian so the government made it so we heard even more nickleback and I dont really see them as much different than most mainstream ‘hard rock’ post nirvana, I think most of it sucks. I dont really like grunge much from before either cause in general I dont like mainstream music from aby era cause it sounds like a watered down version of what was underground hype s decade earlier. Im mostly indifferent or ignorant of what mainstream music is

I’m thinking more along the lines of hoping X person or band dies just because you don’t like their music, which I think it’s excessive just for making music you don’t like.

Although tbh spending your time hating on music you don’t like is unproductive too.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Nickelback lately because I strongly believe that Next Contestant has the potential to be parodied into something that would make an awesome soundtrack for a video of ICE, Cops, and other Fash getting their asses beat.

“Is that your hand, on my comrade? Is that your hand?”

My brain ain’t doing it’s usual magic though, so if anyone else has ideas, feel free to run with it.

That being said, yeah they’re just as good as any other pop band out there. Hating them just became a meme.

I honestly don’t even hate Nickelback’s music that much. They have some songs I kind of like.

Agree on Mötley Crüe though. Terrible people who have been making terrible music since the 90s.
