A traditional folk song with African American roots, was first published in a book of songs back in the mid-1910’s but the song is likely older than that. it was first recorded by Honey and Sassafras in 1929 and popularized by Woodie Guthrie, and fucking Andy Griffith.
It’s a song sung to the tune of ‘Sweet Thing’ which itself is even older.
This version by TMP is my favorite. I used to play this on guitar and sing for my kids when they were babies.
