  • 26.08.2025 | Celebratory Shave

    • Brush: RazoRock Beehive 28 mm
    • Razor: GEM Micromatic Bullet Tip/Flying Wing, gold plated
    • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE
    • Lather: HAGS - Barberwood
    • Post-Shave: HAGS - Barberwood toner
    • Passes & Info: 2 passes on the head, single ATG pass on the neck; kinda rough shave due to a new GEM blade, still enjoyed it very much.

It is done. Finally, I passed the last exam today and I aced it! It was an oral exam where we had to draw envelopes with different case studies and questions regarding nursing topics. My first draw was shite, but thankfully you get another: woohoo! A child w/ neurodermatitis, blood sampling, medical advice for the parents, skincare for ND and the impact of chronic illnesses on young people. Totally up my alley, so I passed with flying colours (A/1). Couldn’t be happier since.

I wanted at least a short shave to celebrate, but in the end it was enough lather for 3+ passes. So I went with it, even though the shave was a bit rough thanks to the new GEM blade. Well, I wanted to use my only golden razor. Still worth it - as much as I dislike the generative AI tub art of this soap, the scent is so good. A bit sweeter than I usually like my barbershops, but at least the toner brings more of the woody notes that its name promises. This isn’t the best HAGS base IMHO, even though “Hathor” sounds like the premium line. To me, the best is undoubtedly the mutton tallow base which seems to be a common preference in the wetshaving hobby. IDK, maybe sheep are really slick & greasy?!

Tomorrow we’ll get our final results of all exams in the afternoon and on Friday our graduation certificate. I’m really stoked 👌🏻

    • Brush: RazoRock Beehive 28 mm
    • Razor: RazoRock Cyber Medium w/ Superknurl handle
    • Blade: Parker Super Platinum
    • Lather: Wholly Kaw - Vor V
    • Post-Shave: Moon Soaps - Old School “balm”
    • Passes & Info: 2 passes on the head, 1 on the neck. Not the worst shave, but this blade isn’t very sharp either. One small blood spot on the scalp, another on the neck.

Skin issues yet again, so I used one of my mildest razors available. I seriously don’t know WTF is going on with my facial skin, but I kinda got it under control with charcoal soap, a mild peeling and ceramide cream. Moustache and soul patch are gone for good, but no face shaving in the foreseeable future either.

Anyways, I still wanted a shave to calm down and center my focus on something nice. I’m really nervous about tomorrow’s oral exam and it’s been hard on me. So this was my type of relaxing & self care for today. Vor V with its awesome fruity leather scent, another indian blade with a platinum coating - this one is kinda good, but still too dull for my preference - and the misnamed aftershave lotion by Moon. The latter seems to finally go really bad, I’m afraid I’ll have to dump it.

Despite those little blood spots, the shave was actually not that rough. At least I’ll look sharp for tomorrow; I just want to get it over with and finally finish my retraining, get my degree on Friday and be done with learning dry stuff. I’ll just need to pass this final obstacle!

    • Brush: RazoRock Beehive 28 mm
    • Razor: Greencult GC 2.0, plate II
    • Blade: The Gentleman’s Super Platinum (DE blade, made in India)
    • Lather: E&S Rasage - Shaman
    • Post-Shave: OAM - oli del benessere sensitive skin toner; moisturiser
    • Passes & Info: 1-pass + cleanup on both head and face around a short moustache & soul patch. Just one tiny blood spot on the chin, but the blade felt rough in general.

Today was a day where I actually shaved again. Despite the uneven moustache growth atm, I was so fed up by the full goatee that I just cut it off earlier today. I look a bit weird with both the 'stache and the patch being rather short, but I hope it’ll grow out soon. I was kinda itching to shave my chin again, both figuratively and literally.

Today’s blade is a mysterious case: I genuinely don’t know where I got this pack of 7 blades (“5+2”, as the ad on the cardboard box says) from. I know I got some “Willy’s” which are made in India from a Pearl Razor, but this one was strange. It definitely was a freebie, since I never ordered these blades. And probably with good reason: the shave wasn’t abysmal by any means, but the blade felt pretty rough on my face. On my head, it’s less of a problem since the hair there is softer. But I already felt that it wasn’t the best on the back of my head, where some coarse hairs reside. And once it got to the steel wool of my face, it was not very smooth.

However, it also didn’t help that my lather was a bit too dry today and that I had some issues with shaking hands after my first home workout in months. So I will probably need to test it again. But if the first impression isn’t the greatest, it usually isn’t improving much with me. Maybe it’s better in a different razor, who knows…

  • I haven’t until now. After 3 different songs, it feels pretty smooth IMHO. A bit of prog rock, a bit ambient, some britpop influence (mostly in the vocals). Thanks for the suggestion! It sounds a bit like artists I’d find on Digitalis by soma.fm (I don’t know if you’re familiar with their different online radio stations). Maybe you’d like something like this here too?: HTRK - Gilbert and George Most of my other ambient consumption is from the darker side of things and soundtracks.

The problem is that I downloaded a Linux distro on the stick but it says that it can’t be opened. Judging by the files, I don’t know where/how to run them from. It seems like I need something else on the USB stick to compile & run the files in the right order, I guess? I’ve unfortunately done my research pretty superficially, I admit 😅

  • I’m currently in the final phase of preparation for the last part of my exam: the oral exam. TBH, it’s 60% knowledge and 40% luck of the draw: if I draw an envelope with topics that I’m well-versed in, I’m sure I can pass it with flying colours. It’s next Tuesday and currently I just want it to be over, I’m so tired of studying. I want to convert my school laptop into something for personal use, in case anyone is familiar with running Linux from an USB drive hmu - I have a few interesting distros installed but I can’t seem to get it running.

However, since a peculiar bout of melancholy overcame me as I suddenly realized that after 3 years of constantly preparing for new things and always preparing for something different will end, I got myself an online piano/keyboard course today. Of course I won’t ever be a classical pianist, but since this course seems to focus more on playing contemporary music instead of reading sheet music and complex arrangements, I should be alright. My end goal is to be able to play some ambient music that sounds more interesting and unique than the awful AI ambient music circulating YT and streaming services. I also have taken up listening to Ambient while I shave now: it helps me to be more “in the moment”, so to speak. It’s difficult to explain and maybe it’s an ADHD thing. Relaxing Ambient and Drone can help me to be calmer, Dark Ambient generally helps me to stay alert and keep my focus, Experimental stuff helps me to try out new things. I often think about certain situations and events and definitely connect some kind of music or melody to it. Perhaps that’s strange, but that’s how my brain works.

I can also happily report that I successfully got back into reading as a hobby thanks to the tip of a YouTuber: he recommended reading before sleeping and starting with short stories or shorter books. I have read “The Stranger” by Albert Camus this month, and even though this wasn’t the most motivating literature, I like how I could finish an entire book just by nighttime reading sessions.

  • PieFed does run smoothly and everything is loaded very fast.

Cloudflare has a few critiques, but if the alternative is AI bots and DDoS attacks I think it’s the better alternative. Just look at how vanilla YT comment sections look nowadays. You can’t say certain words but the spambots for crude scams run rampant. I really hope the Fediverse finds a good way to combat this and if Cloudflare is part of the solution, so be it. They also work with Mozilla, so they can’t be totally evil IMHO.

    • Brush: RazoRock Beehive 28 mm
    • Razor: Stando Perun
    • Blade: Personna Super DE
    • Lather: Barrister & Mann - Le Grand Chypre
    • Post-Shave: OAM - oli del benessere sensitive skin toner
    • Passes & Info: 2-pass face shave, felt good except the same 3 tiny blood spots as last time appeared. Contouring the doorknocker isn’t the strong suit of this razor either.

This was a rather comfortable shave except when it came to lining up the beard. The Perun really does great on my head shaves, but this seems to be its weakness. Had to put a little bit more pressure on and go over the same areas multiple times, so the exact same pattern of 3 small blood spots appeared again. Oh well, one can’t have everything.

I really took my time for the prep and lathering though and it paid off. Used a “pre-shave scrub” peeling and hot water, built a nice slick lather and the shave was rather smooth.

Also, LGC with its cola scent never ceases to amaze me. This is a really slick soap, but despite all the fancy scent notes it’s just pure coke with lime to my nose.

    • Brush: RazoRock Beehive 28 mm
    • Razor: Stando Perun
    • Blade: Personna Super DE
    • Lather: Chiseled Face - Ghost Town Barber
    • Post-Shave: Lavera - Men sensitive ASB
    • Passes & Info: 2 passes on the head this time. Nice, quick and uneventful shave.

Today it was due time for a good head shave, but I only got to it shortly before Midnight (local time). I had a lot of stubble to cut down, but the Perun did it with ease. Maybe this blade is a good fit for it, unfortunately I just have ~4 of them left.

Chiseled Face’s and Stirling’s soap bases are kinda my “Ol’ Reliable”, i.e.: Nothing too fancy with tons of exotic butters and oils, but good ingredients to whip up a nice lather fast and have just enough slickness for your shave. It also helps that GTB is such a interesting & spicy take on the faux genre of barbershop scents that it’s quite pleasant to use.

    • Brush: RazoRock Beehive 28 mm
    • Razor: RazoRock Hawk V2 w/ Cyber handle
    • Blade: KAI Captain Protouch MG
    • Lather: Barrister & Mann - The Full Measure of Man
    • Post-Shave: Moon Soaps - Old School “balm”
    • Passes & Info: 2-pass face shave around a very short-trimmed circle beard, just 3 small blood spots but otherwise a good shave!

First test of an SOTD post from my PieFed-account. Otherwise yeah, it’s the same old Dave you all know.

I’ve now landed on Summit as my Fediverse app of choice, unfortunately not on Droidify/F-Droid but seemingly a nice app with the same high level of customization as I was used to by Raccoon. As for PieFed, it’s still a bit early to make a full statement - it seems like it federates well with Lemmy but I can’t make any further statements yet. As a normal user who isn’t a mod/admin of any community, my first impression is that it loads everything quickly and that’s nice - I haven’t seen too many bad posts that are auto hidden or anything in terms of low quality tags yet, but maybe that’s an API thing too. Unfortunately Summit doesn’t show our SOTD logo picture, and according to walden PieFed still lacks picture upload support at the moment (which would be better for our hobby). Maybe I can share more concise thoughts in a few weeks, so I’ll still keep my Lemmy account on standby…

So for this shave itself: I basically had to wait until today for everything to heal up after my misfortune with the shavette. As for a tiny mishap, I forgot to check which guide comb was on my trimmer earlier and trimmed my henriquatre to just 1.5 mm instead of 3 mm, so I actually had to re-shape it with my zero gap trimmer as it was barely recognizable from the surrounding stubble. This shave was really necessary to give it a sharp look.

The shave itself went way better than expected, just 3 little blood spots appeared on the second pass (I couldn’t really call them weepers since they immediately stopped bleeding after a cold water rinse and applying the aftershave). FMoM is great as always and it was slick enough for the tricky contouring work. A big success!

Anyways, please let me know if anything looks weird in my posts. Still getting used to the new app. Hope everyone had a nice weekend!
