The actions your character takes (picking up objects, looting bodies, crafting, etc.) are realistically slow for the most part. Embrace it. A lot of people hate it but for me I think it’s a game that was intentionally designed to be taken slowly and is better for it.
Don’t try to experiment or find novel solutions during missions, just do exactly what the game tells you. It’s an open world until you’re in a mission, at which point you’re forced onto a very narrow path. Feels like the developers didn’t want you to think or get creative, they wanted you to control your character as if he’s an actor in a movie performing a role. There’s a single case that I know of where you can successfully go “off-script” but by the time you get there the game will have trained you to strictly follow its orders, so you probably won’t find it.
I don’t know about you, but for me I loved the early hours of the game when money was scarce. I felt like I really had to make decisions between upgrading my ammo pouch, or saving up to buy a varmint rifle so I could get perfect pelts, or upgrading the camp so I could swap horses there. Unfortunately I soon found my first gold bar and sold it for a ton of money, after which money was almost a complete non-factor. If you enjoy games where resources are scarce and you have to make tough decisions, avoid selling high-value items. It’s way too easy to become extremely wealthy. In addition, this ability to get rich quick really clashes with the game’s storyline, creating some noticeable narrative incoherence.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy your time with it. It’s by far the worst game I’ve ever loved.
