News@lemmy.world•Poll: Two-thirds of Americans say ICE has 'gone too far' in immigration enforcement
2·2 months agoPerhaps a dumb question, but I’m not from the U.S, so a genuine question here: Why might the Superbowl be a way for a lot of Americans to learn about ICE?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why Is It Harder To Move People To Open Source - Decentralized Options?
11·2 months agoThis is the second comment I see mentioning Upscrolled, and the first I see mentioning Cara. Up until like two minutes ago, I have not heard about either of those, and I think I don’t want to hear about them anyway. I haven’t been using TikTok or Instagram anyway, so I don’t really need a replacement for those apps.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why Is It Harder To Move People To Open Source - Decentralized Options?
1·2 months agoYeah, it’s just like with cookies. Sure, even without an Adblocker and all that, you could disable the cookies, but that means pressing several more buttons to disable all of the things. So, I feel like most people unfortunately just press accept and move on because it’s the quickest way to get to the information they were searching for.

World News@lemmy.world•Spain, Greece weigh teen social media bans, drawing fury from Elon MuskEnglish
201·2 months agoElon Musk being against the social media ban on under 16-year-olds is him basically reaching a good conclusion from the wrong equation, because he’s not doing it out of privacy concerns about how everyone would probably have to verify themselves to prove that they’re older than 16 years old. He’s doing it because it would not be good for his business.
I’m not sure how they could implement this without requiring ID verification on every single internet user. I guess I’m not familiar with the topic enough to say if there is another way that they could pursue, but even if there is, at the same time, I’m not too confident in the governments opting for the other options. I’m from neither Spain nor Greece, so I guess I can’t speak on this, but I’m just referring to governments as a general group. And because a lot of different countries are trying to do this at the same time, I’m also not too confident about my own country not doing this at some point, sooner or later.
Honestly, even if time travel were theoretically possible to be invented, there’s also a high chance that we’re just going to destroy ourselves before we get to that point anyway.

Technology@lemmy.world•Is Wikipedia's Volunteer Model Facing a Generational Crisis?English
5·2 months agoI feel like this will end up being a cycle. The AI companies are pushing for AI summaries, which then leads to younger Gen Z and the new Gen Alpha being familiar with and preferring AI summaries. This, in turn, leads to other companies implementing AI summaries because they see that’s what the new generations are using, which leads to the new generations being even more accustomed to those summaries, which leads to more companies implementing them, and it’s just an endless cycle.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Here's the most played games on Steam Deck for January 2026
1·2 months agoNot sure how to make sense of the first one, but as for the second one, it seems like they forgot to type a word. Add “on” right before “Valve’s handheld”, and that sentence makes sense now.
Oh, for sure. I wouldn’t want that. To be fair, I just want to not be looked at weird for never having been in a relationship more than I want a relationship at this point.
That’s not to say that I would want a horrible relationship just so I can say “I was in a relationship”. But oddly enough some people would view me better if that happened, because it means I was able to attract someone.
Spot on! There is some overlap for sure, but I don’t agree with the notion that if you can’t get a relationship, it means you’re a conservative.
I’ve never dated and am not conservative at all, but I sometimes feel like I’m looked at with suspicion by other leftists when I mention this.
I sometimes see someone being sad about not having had a partner, and someone will reply stuff like “Have you tried not being sexist?”, even if there’s nothing in the post to indicate that they are sexist. But some people immediately assume that, because never dating but being progressive does not compute for them.
I’m not who you were replying to, but I agree and disagree with your comment.
I’m not saying someone can’t be happy single. But society makes it hard to be when the world revolves around relationships, being a virgin is used as an insult, etc.
But I do agree with you that not everyone needs to have a partner. I don’t see myself ever getting into a relationship, and to some extent I’m often close to making peace with that, until I see a post, a comment, a video, etc, that makes me feel inferior due to it.
I do appreciate, though, the fact that you admit not everyone needs to have a relationship and that not everyone will have one. I’ll take this approach every day of the week over the “Naaah, I’m sure you will be in a relationship soon cause everyone does!”, followed by moving the goalpost (it’s always “soon” regardless of how many years have passed).

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Piefed monthly user activity has increased by nearly 500 in 3 days.English
4·2 months agoI’m probably applying too much logic here which Reddit admins don’t seem to like, but… how can defending oneself if something happens (not even preemptively, but after the fact) be threatening violence, while Trump repeatedly saying they’re gonna own Greenland one way or another is not threatening violence?

1·2 months agoDonating is great, sure, and they’re probably more likely to stick around if they paid, but just because someone isn’t donating doesn’t mean they won’t be active in the comments or by making posts. Not to mention they might spread the word to friends, some of whom might donate.

Books@lemmy.world•What book(s) are you currently reading or listening to? January 13
1·2 months agoI don’t often read books and I checked this thread just out of curiosity cause it popped up. I have heard of Watership Down, though, and now knowing the audiobook is by Peter Capaldi, I now know how I want to experience this book if I ever get around to it: the audiobook!
Monkey’s Paw.

2·2 months agoJust took a quick look, haven’t watched anything in full yet, but this seems to have a lot of interesting stuff. Thanks for the recommendation!
EDIT: I just saw that some videos are apparently not available unless you confirm with your ID that you are over 16 or over 18 years old depending on the video. I haven’t ran into anything requiring verification yet but I would really rather not do that. What kind of videos require ID and is that often or is it just like one video here and there?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there anything like church without the church?
2·2 months agoThat is something I never understood about Christianity: Why would God place equal importance to “being a good person” and “believe in me or else”?
To me it seems like being a good person should be way more important. But in practice it seems like believing in God is the key and everything else is secondary, like you can be an asshole but just make sure you’re a believer.

What’s the point then? I pay for a game that I’m not even playing just so, what, my numbers of “completed” games goes up?
I’m someone who likes seeing the stats go up as I watch anime. But I do it naturally and over time. This AI idea is like if I were to start an anime, put it on auto-play while I sleep, and when I wake up it’ll be done, without me seeing a single scene.
