  • Last time I visited SF, there were so many moments of “wow this is a poignant visual metaphor representing this hellscape”. The one that stands out most was cryptocurrency billboard above unhoused people in front of a store where they automated out all of the customer-facing workers

  • Other than removing the ability of bigots and wreckers from hindering discussions or silencing users by burying posts with downvotes, as barrbaric said:

One healthy side effect is that it encouraged participation in discussions — if you think a take is bad enough to deserve a downvote anyway, you just need to do so in a way that associated with your user account (usually the nifty downbear emoji.) If others disagree with your assessment, they’ll reply with why, and it starts a discussion. Now people need to post their dissent publicly.

I was apprehensive about the change when it was originally made but came around on it really quickly, it really made it much more pleasant and friendly to participate in the community.

  • Worst one since I cut ties with my family was my worst-ever flare up of stress-induced GI issues that turned into intermittent vomiting episodes lasting from christmas eve until I went to the ER on new year’s day a few hours after midnight, ruined a little roadtrip my fiancee and I planned. Plus my work had just switched (worsened) our health insurance providers (effective at midnight jan 1) so getting that sorted out was a nightmare too.

Ones with my family idr, really. The norm was a mess of alcohol, gaslighting, and badly-veiled contempt for everyone (present, not present, unfortunate enough to be a stranger passing by, etc) usually with extremely disorienting travel involved. Even the cyclical vomiting is preferable.
