help-circle

    1. Meditating (not very good at it, but getting better and it’s seriously helping)
    2. Blocking Reddit on my router, blocking political communities in Lemmy
    3. A consistent, normal sleeping schedule (a bedtime routine is more important than a morning routine, imo)
    4. Yoga every morning to help my body work with me throughout the day
    5. Reading more books
    6. Getting outside more often
    7. Paying closer attention to the thoughts that cross through my mind and stopping them when they’re not helpful - this also helped me realize the underlying anxiety that’s been with me for who knows how many years
    8. Drinking more water

    Edit: Oh I also:

    • Quit drinking alcohol, almost at the 1 year mark
    • Quit smoking weed, almost at 2 months fully sober now

I did these things one at a time, not everything at once. Mostly just sharing what I did here, but if you plan to do the same - listen to yourself. Start with #7 imo so you get a better idea of what you’re up against. If it feels like too much, take a step back and slow down. You’re not failing when you do this, you’re helping your future self not fail entirely.

  • Edit: facepalm I’m just noticing this is a community for the Boost for Lemmy app, not the official site. Please ignore me.

In your account Settings, scroll down to the Languages section and select Undetermined and other languages you’d like to see.

It’s not 100% foolproof, because as others have stated, the language tag isn’t required. But it significantly reduced most of the foreign-language posts I was seeing on the All feed, without impacting the feed in a negative way (AFAIK). For the remainders, you can just block the community if needed.

  • Can’t believe I’m about to say this, but hear me out … take a gander at “How to Win Friends and Influence People”.

For the record, every time someone mentioned this to me, I’d cringe with disgust. I avoided it for most of my life because I viewed the content as a way to manipulate people. And yeah, maybe it kinda is, but at its core, it explains human psychology and the way our brains really work. We’re just kinda selfish, ya know? Most of us need to get before we even think about giving. We’ve got a lot to worry about and too much to focus on sometimes.

Idk, maybe there are better books out there, better references, etc. But that book helped me with a lot of my social issues, improved relationships with my coworkers, etc. To me, it’s more than just a “Tell them why they want it before even asking them” type of thing, it helped me understand the other person’s point of view better, helped me empathize with their needs before charging through, full speed ahead. Instead of thinking “this is a really good idea, everyone should back me”, I think more about how it would actually benefit others instead of “this is what I want, we should do it”.

  • fetal bovine serum (FBS)… is derived from the blood of calf fetuses after their pregnant mothers are slaughtered by the meat or dairy industry.

I did not know this… and after reading the wiki, I found it rather disturbing…

The first stage of the production process for FBS is the harvesting of blood from the bovine fetus after the fetus is removed from the slaughtered cow. The fetus dies from the lack of oxygen by remaining in the protective environment of the uterus for a minimum of 15–20 minutes after the cow is dead
