I uploaded giga upon gigabytes of well-curated (tags, etc.) songs - the max was 400MB per file so you could just about fit a 1 hour DJ session into that as a single “song” as well. The desktop app was complete garbage but you could eventually get your entire MP3 collection uploaded as a massive recommendation seed for the engine to use “more like this!”. Or put 30 songs into a playlist and then say “make me a radio station based on these 30 songs.” and next thing you new you had a 500 long tracks playlist of similar music. sigh those were the good days.

Unfortunately it had a lot of internal track mis-labeling problems; a number of my saved playlists got destroyed when the conversion to YTM happened as the two services could not agree on what a given song was, so YTM thoughtfully made a mess of it. (as well as GM having songs YTM did not, so all those just disappeared too). This soured me on ever adopting YTM and pushed me back to Shoutcast/Icecast solutions.

  • I fear you may have misread my intention in comment; nothing nefarious intended, it’s about the “no updates to this app for years” which can equal “security issues unpatched” for the average, regular person. You did not disclaim the above details in your OP, you are NOT a normal user and had I known that I would never have commented.

  • All the other replies tiptoeing around this - OP, your son has hormones raging in his body, he’s going to masturbate a lot. In my opinion and I’m going to be blunt, maybe focus on:

    • letting him know it’s normal for all this hormonal activity, masturbation is OK and not something to be frowned upon or ridiculed (well unless you two joke a lot which would be cool). In fact, as he starts to go out on dates gently suggest he rub one out before the date to calm his hormones the F down, which leads me to…

    • he’s gonna get boners all the time, it’s just a thing that comes with all those raging hormones. It can happen in unfortunate places and unfortunate circumstances (8th grade science class wearing stretchy shorts? SURE WHY NOT), so as a mom be aware this could be happening but he of course doesn’t want to say anything to you. Ignore or treat it as normal (or again, bust a joke if you’re tight like that).

    • teach him to respect his partners and not be just letting his hormones take over and he wants to stick his dick in everything. This is I feel something is missed on all “sex ed”, to me the biggest part is not the physical act but the negative emotional results if he lets those hormones take over. Hetero or gay doesn’t matter, it’s all the same - your partner has feelings and be aware (“don’t be an f’ing asshole”).

I’m of an age these days, but man I wish someone in an adult capacity had covered the above when I was a teenager. Instead, growing up with repressed catholic type parents it took me way, way too long to grasp the above on my own.

Side comment, I find it more … interesting? (concerning?) they have “essential apps can’t run on 14” which to me is sort of a red flag event for those apps. $0.02 we’re up to 15 mainline with 16 coming soon, relying on apps stuck back on 13 never updated would not work for my conscious.

  • 5.) Not being able to create your own custom feeds is also a massive problem because you can’t split your feed into types like memes/news/discussions/meta etc.

This is a big one for me - on R, one can create a “multireddit” (collection view of multiple subreddits in one combined feed) without subscribing to any of the communities; for example I have one called “news” that’s 10+ news subreddits which I do not subscribe to; subscriptions are for my actual real direct interests only. Subscribing to news specific communities can quickly overrun and bury your Subscribed feed.

Lemmy as a software platform is missing the entire concept of a multireddit and detracts from it’s usefulness for certain types of users such as myself; I still get most of my daily news from R and sadly gaming communities did not migrate en masse to lemmyverse so they’re all still on R.

I mostly just want to ensure mine is visible to others.

This is the tricky part - you will be remote-invisible until someone from the other instance(s) follow you for any of your content to show up in their Explore (hashtags, etc.) feed for other people to discover you. Pixelfed.social is the biggest hub by far so getting on that radar is key (much like joining a small Mastodon instance and you want to be “seen” on mastodon.social e.g. - same processes).

So you want to follow yourself from your pixelfed.social account to your own domain.com, so that your domain.com profile is seeded (federated) for other pixelfed.social users to discover as they browse. It’s a hack but there’s no other real way given how “opt-in” federation works, unless you have pre-existing friends on pixelfed.social who subscribe to your domain.com for you right away so you don’t have to hack it to get started.

  • Your favourite search engine -> “pixelfed no video preview” -> several Github issues that are all closed, some with commits saying something was fixed, others just closed without resolution.

I experience this preview problem viewing videos posted both by Pixelfed uploads (such as yours) and videos posted via Mastodon instances which I follow in Pixelfed. There’s something broken in Pixelfed software being able to generate video previews from several sources in my experience, which do not exist if you follow those same accounts from a Mastodon instance.
