  • I’m not very good at securing Linux, but from what I’ve seen, NixOS leaves a lot to be desired. It doesn’t officially support SELinux and requires a lot of work to make it function properly. It supports other mandatory access control programs, which I’m not really sure how they compare. The store being world readable is another problem. The most obvious issue with that is if you’re doing business work with two clients on the same computer where infrastructure needs to remain confidential, where one client’s programs can read the store and see information about the other clients, even on separate user accounts.

  • Reddit is shit at being a community, but it’s far better than being stuck in exclusively Christian nationalist spaces. Even as a right-wing platform, it helped me question my political beliefs and discover my sexuality (which isn’t as important now that I’m in an accepting area, but it fucked up my mental health before then), along with finding loads of information relevant to my hobbies, and it’s also how I found Lemmy. Lemmy/Hexbear is a much better community, but it doesn’t have anywhere near the breadth of information and discussion that Reddit has. Where I live, leftist organizations mostly advertise on Instagram. As far as other productive uses go, Facebook has Marketplace and Groups which can have information that Reddit doesn’t, Youtube has tons of educational content, and TikTok/Instagram/Facebook can be helpful for promoting art or skills. I would agree though that in general, the algorithmic feed-driven platforms are horrible for community, and Reddit being infested with bots and paid actors makes it more questionable.

  • I host my main server on my own hardware, and a VPN on Hetzner because my shitty ISP doesn’t let me port forward. For the past year, bots were hitting my Forgejo instance hard. I forgot to disable registration and they generated hundreds of accounts with hundreds of repos with sketchy links, generating terrabytes of traffic from my VPS, costing me money in traffic. I disabled registration and deleted the spam, and bots still kept hitting my server for several months, which would cause memory leaks over time and crash it and consume CPU, and still costed me money with terrabytes of traffic per month. A few weeks ago, I put Anubis on the VPS. Now, zero bots hit my Forgejo instance and I don’t pay for their traffic anymore. Problem solved.

  • As shitty as AI is for counseling, the alternative resources are so few, unreliable, and taboo that I can’t blame people for wanting to use it. People will judge and remember you. AI affirms and forgets. People have mandatory reporting for “self harm” (which could include things like drug usage) that incarcerates you and fucks up your life even more. AI does not. People are varied with differing advice, while AI uses the same models in different contexts. Counselors are expensive, AI is $20/mo. And lastly, people have a tendency to react fearfully to taboo topics in ways that AI doesn’t. I see a lot of outrage towards AI, but it seems like the sort of outrage that led to half-assed liability-driven “call this number and all of your problems will be solved” incarceration and abandonment hotlines is what got us here to begin with.
