World News@lemmy.world•Births in Japan fall in 2025 to 706,000, record low for 10th straight yearEnglish
12·23 days agoThe legitimate concern is every economy runs on the assumption of infinite growth. In essence every nations economy is one big pyramid scheme that can go on and on as long their women have at least 2.1 births on their downline.
We need a system that can run well on degrowth, there’s no good reason why one couldn’t work but there are trillions of reasons why people will fight tooth and nail to prop up the current one. People’s choices and the environment be damned.

182·23 days agoI think we’re just going to have to come to terms with the idea that people simply have better shit to do.
An educated population has more options to choose from, having kids doesn’t make the cut.
Meanwhile you have Handmaids Tale hellscapes like Afghanistan which has one of the highest birthrates in the world at 4.8 births per woman, is it worth it? I think not.
Ideally countries will accept people’s choices and prepare for a future with less people but the whole system runs on endless growth so I imagine we’ll see some brutal stick action when it’s obvious the carrots aren’t moving the needle enough.
If you’ve only eaten Red Delicious I could see how one would have that take. Gotta branch out and try different ones. Fuji, Macintosh, Pink Lady etc.
There’s an Apple for you out there.

News@lemmy.world•Videos show altercation between Alex Pretti and federal officers 11 days before he was killed
36·2 months agoThey’ll try and in a way I’m glad because they’re showing their hand, conservatives have gone completely insane and will justify anything they’re told to.
Normal people understand kicking a taillight a week prior doesn’t justify the execution.

World News@lemmy.world•Iran signals fast trials and executions for protesters as death toll in crackdown goes over 2,500English
5·2 months ago“In order for nonviolence to work, your opponent must have a conscience.”
Sadly the protestors never had a chance. The Iranian regime will hold on unless the people are ready for the next step. I could easily see this turning into another long and drawn out affair like the Syrian civil war.

News@lemmy.world•Report Warns Millions of Americans Are ‘Functionally Unemployed’
17·3 months agoI seen a comment on the other site saying “the verified, tax-paying EMPLOYMENT level, as opposed to Unemployment level, is currently 53%”
Would be interesting to see what that level has been at through the years to get an idea of where we actually stand.
I know the current unemployment reporting is completely inadequate with gig work/underemployment and people simply giving up not being counted in the official numbers.
1 guy 1 jar is pure art. Shows the strength, resolve, and sheer fucking hubris of the human condition. Highly recommend everyone viewing it at least once. Plus the guy lived and was quite proud of his, achievement.

World News@lemmy.world•Ukraine deal: EU leaders agree €90bn loan, but without use of frozen Russian assetsEnglish
12·3 months agoif they weren’t serious, there wouldn’t be a deal.
Yeah I guess they wouldn’t be working on the 20th sanctions package if they weren’t serious /s
These cute little deals and sanctions packages are rolled out periodically to make it look like they’re doing something substantial to counter Russia.
In reality they’re easy political wins that don’t make many waves, in Russia or with EU voters.
The proof is in the outcome, 4 years on since the full invasion and Putin is as emboldened as ever. Maybe we just need to wait for the 21st sanctions package to hit, maybe then he’ll rethink things.

5·3 months agoWe’re coming up on the 4 year anniversary of the invasion. If Europe wanted to use these assets they would have done so already. The willingness just isn’t there.

14·3 months agoThat’s a choice. And it’s Belgium, the rest of Europe could have pressured them into doing the right thing but they’re not that serious about Russia so they didn’t.

191·3 months agoOh they could have used them. They chose not to.
Definitely shameful, I was hoping to see Europe develope a spine in the wake of the US losing theirs. That was wishful thinking.

342·4 months agoSwitched my users to Jellyfin this spring when Plex first announced this move, pretty seamless transition.
I actually prefer Jellyfin and it’s UI compared to the new one Plex rolled out on Roku, what a mess that is to navigate now.

Ah my people.
Being a walking billboard never sat well with me either.
