I’ve been considering a Linux cellphone for a long time, and Google’s latest shenanigans finally decided me. I have a new phone on order that I will install Ubuntu Touch onto. Hopefully it won’t be too much of a functional hit compared to CalyxOS.
Fuck Google with a broomstick.
Also, in case it bore repeating: fuck Google.
- Nice. I just bought a Fairphone 6 for the same reason. I’d love Ubuntu Touch, but I need dual-SIM. I guess /e/OS will do for now. - I should have noticed when Google removed “don’t be evil”, but I guess better late than never. Watching them remove an ICE tracking app from the play store just removed the last bit of doubt. - Wasn’t the ICEblock app Apple only, or was their an Android version of the app as well? - Similar app by a different name - https://www.theverge.com/news/791533/google-apple-ice-tracking-app-store-red-dot-iceblock

- Not only did they remove it, they called ICE a vulnerable group in their decision to do so…

- Which phone did you end up going with? - Fairphone 5. - Regardless of the OS, I only buy Fairphones anyway. Luckily, Fairphones offer very good support for alternative OSes. - Awesome, and they seem to have a good reputation. Hope everything works out ok, post some insights if you get the chance!

- Canada is hungry for alternatives. - Absolutely, lets count our lucky stars for arch and graphene! - ArchLinux? What are you taking about you sweetest dog?

- Looking forward to your 6 month review. 🙏
- Ive been tempted to try Ubuntu Touch aswwell, but cant get my damn phone to recognise my laptop and vice versa. doesn’t matter which port or cable! - FYI - ubuntu touch doesnt have encryption yet, so if it gets stolen everything will be available for the thief.- UT has encryption now on 24.04. - holy shit, thats a game changer then - Their last update smoothed out quite a few things.
